(Ann Arbor Film Coop; MLB 4, 7:00, 9:00) BETRAYAL (David Jones, 1983) Probably one of the worst films of 1983, especially because it seems to believe its own pretentiousness. Ben Kingsley stars in a tale of adultery which has some of the worst dialogue ever. Many thought it to be great, though. Aud., 7:00,9:00) WAR GAMES (John Badham, 1983) A rousing entertainment in which Matthew Broderick plays a computer whiz kid who hooks into a Defense Department computer and starts to set WW III into action. The end drowns in heavyhanded moralizing, but everything else is so much fun it can be forgiven. (Cinema 2; Aud. A, 7:00,9:15) GRASS (Merian Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, 1925) One of the earliest and ethnographic films deals with theBakhtiari tribe of Persia, which has to make a mass migration two times every year to find grass for their flocks. Like most films from 1925, this one is silent. (Cinema Guild, Lorch Hall, 7:00, FREE) CASTLE OF PURITY (Arturo Ripstein, 1972) Some people have the most unusual habits, and this film looks at one of them. The subject is a Mexican man who keeps his family locked inside the house while he goes on selling his homemade rat poison. Based on a true story. (Ann Arbor Film Coop; MLB 1, 8:00, FREE) The FUGITIVE KIND (Sidney Lumet, 1960) Tennessee Williams scripts, and Marlon Brando stars. He plays a bum who finds employement as a shoe salesman in a Southern town and seems to serve as a catalyst for trouble. (Cinema Guild; Lorch Hall, 7:00) ON THE WATERFRONT (Elia Kazan, 1954) Marlon Brando stars in this one, too, but I bet you knew that already. He won an Oscar for his role as a boxer mixed up in a corrupt union. Leonard Ber- nstein provides the music. A short, What's Cookin' Doc? will also be provided. (Cinema Guild; torch Hall, 9:10) CIAO MANHATTAN (David Weisman, 1970) A look at the sixties lifestyle by an Andy Warhol protege gets a belated Ann Arbor Premiere. The movie was five years in the making. (Cinema 2; Aud. A, 7:00, 9:00) PSYCHO (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins star. Perkins plays a slightly deranged young man with a mother fixation who gives Leigh a room for the night at the Bates Motel, and then tries to keep her from enjoying the facilities. The masterpiece by Hitchcock is very funny and very scary. See it. (Ann Arbor Film Coop; Nat. Sci. Aud., 7:00) CARRIE (Brian de Palma, 1976) Sissy Spacek stars as a psychicly gifted young girl who just cannot stand the treatment given by her schoolmates, and decides to take revenge. Aud., 9:00) ANNIE HALL (Woody Allen, 1978) A semi-autobiographical work about Allen's relationship with Diane Keaton which also stars Dian Keaton. The biggest film event of the year in Ann Arbor features in- dependent films of all kinds, from animation to ex- perimental, documentary to narrative. Unfortunately, some members of the army forget that they are supposed to lose, Jean Seberg and Peter Sellers, who plays three different parts, are the stars. (Hill Street Cinema; 1429 Hill, 7:00, 9:00) SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN (Michael Anderson, 1968) Anthony Quinn ascends to the papacy and has to deal with nuclear war and starvation in China while a reporter who is covering the Vatican has to deal with some personal problems.
