Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 2, 1984 Blue bowls over Ba (Continued from Page 1) near the end of the first half; the Wolverines used the height of Roy Tar- pley and Tim McCormick to cruise to their easiest win since the opener against Northwestern. Tarpley finished with 22 points and eight rebounds, Mc- Cormick 18 and four. It was a big victory too because Ohio State lost to Illinois, moving the Wolverines in sole possession of fourth place in the Big Ten and closer to NCAA tournament berth. Michigan stands at 8- 7 and 16-9 overall. Ohio State is a half a game back at 8-8. STATE ST. WHILE THE Wolverines did pretty much as they pleased on offense, their defense shut down the Badger offense, especially guard Rick Olson. Olson, who had 39 points at Madison, was held to just 10 points on 4-9 from the floor. Leading Big Ten scorer Cory Blackwell tallied 28, but many of them came after the contest was a foregone conclusion. Wisconsin snuck up on the Wolverines at the end of the half 37-33, but the Tar- pley scoring machine made the Badgers look like a suburban high school team in the second half. Tarpley hit on four straight jumpers a few minutes into the period to give the Wolverines a 56-45 advantage, leaving the farm-boy types in his wake. "He was just too much for us." THOUGH TARPLEY credited Wisconsin's defense, there was no stop- ping him. His confidence grows with every game. "I feel like I'm not going to miss," he said. The Crisler crowd of 13,109 had more than Tarpley to entertain them, however. Numerous fast break dunks by Tarpley and Rich Rellford from Eric Turner feeds picked up the generally lethargic patrons. "That (the dunks) reminds me of high school," Turner remarked. Rellford was nullified on a potential jam midway in the second half by Blackwell. The Badger star payed a price for going up with the high-flying Rellford. "IT WAS A GOOD block," Rellford admitted. "I told him after it was a good block. But his hand was hurting. dgers He couldn't even shake my hand after." Rellford could afford to be gracious to his opponents. He and his teammates won't see any more games this easy. Coach Bill Frieder even got a rare op- portunity to clear his bench, getting everyone into the blowout except Jon Antonides, who is still injured, and Paul Jokisch. Jokisch, who will play football next year for the Wolverines, declined assistant coach Steve Fisher's offer to enter the contest. "Look, there was 40 seconds left in the game. I don't want to go in with 40 seconds left in the game," he said. As frustrated as Jokisch may be, it probably couldn't be as bad as Wiscon- sin's Yoder. The Wolverine slaughter left him to go cry in his beer. "You guys enjoy the evening," he told reporters. "I'm gonna go have a beer." Kent Ferguson and Bruce Kimball placed second and four- th, respectively, in the one-meter diving. Women netters host Duke, Looking at today's women's tennis home opener against Duke, there are reasons to be both hopeful and pessimistic. "Now we've played matches and I have a better idea about which lineup to play," said fifth-year Michigan coach Oliver Owens. "The kids will not be as nervous.". HOWEVER, this week's snow made life difficult for the Wolverines. "We didn't practice (as a team) Monday and Tuesday," remarked Owens. "It's hard to get court time because the indoor Track and Tennis Building is being prepared for the Big Ten track meet." The Wolverines, 1-5 after their spring trip, will meet a Duke squad that was ranked 14th in the preseason poll Sophomore Sue Taylor, last season's Atlantic Coast Conference "runner-up at number one singles, leads the Blue Devils. Backing her up are Southfield freshman Megan Foster and Ann Arbor sophomore Audrey Solent at second and third singles, respectively. Michigan counters with All-Big Ten senior Mary Mactaggart at number one singles, sophomore Paula Reichert at number two and senior Karen Milczar- ski at the third singles spot. Senior Maryanne Hodges, the only Wolverine to go undefeated during the spring trip will return to the lineup at fifth singles and second doubles, after a bout with the flu. The meet begins at noon at the Huron Valley Tennis Club. -.PHIL NUSSEL Candiens 3, Red Wings 1 By SCOTT SALOWICH Special to the Daily DETROIT - The absence of John Ogrodnick, Dwight Foster and Ivan Boldirev cost the Detroit Red Wings dearly in a 3-1 loss to the Montreal last night at the Joe Louis Arena.
