SPORTS The Michigan Daily Sunday, January 8,'1984 Page 7 Icers s By JOE EWING David slew Goliath last night at Yost Ice Arena. The Michigan hockey team surprised everybody by knocking off number-one ranked Bowling Green, 6-5, when senior co-captain Jim McCauley scored his twelfth goal of the season at 5:18 in overtime. IT WAS ONLY the second time this season the Falcons have lost. Even more impressive though was the fact the Wolverines twice came back from two-goal deficits in the second and third periods to pull off the upset. Sophomore defenseman Pat Goff had scored for the Wolverines on a slapshot from the left point at 15:35 of the third period to tie things up and set the stage for McCauley's overtime heroics. BOWLING GREEN had roared out to a two-goal lead early in the third period on goals by George Roll and John 1Samanski, but the Wolverines cut the Jead to 5-4 on a tally by Bruce Macnab from Paul Kobylarz and John DeMar- tino tun tof Michigan came back from a similar1 fate earlier in the game. Down, 3-1, late in the second period, Macnab skated in on the left side and dished off a perfect pass to Tom Stiles, who gunned the; puck past Falcon goalie Gary Kruzich; at 17:13. Todd Carlile than rifled a slap- shot off the post at 3:03 of the third period and John Bjorkman was there to ram the rebound home, knotting the1 game at three. Samanski got things going for Bowling Green midway through the fir- st period-when he grabbed a rebound off a Gino Cavallini shot and gunned the puck high into the net over Michigan goalie Mark Chiamp for the only score. of the period. BOTH TEAMS, however, had plenty of chances to score in the first stanza, but the play of Chiamp and Kruzich kept the score at 1-0. Chiamp shut out both Samanski and Dan Kane when' they broke in alone, while Kruzich stopped Michigan's Macnab on a breakaway. Doug May tied things up at one apiece at 7:02 of the second period when he -ranked BG beat Kruzich high after linemates Bjorkman and Dan Goff banged shots off the Bowling Green netminder. Bowling Green came storming back and regained the lead as Wayne Wilson for the third time on the night. In all, Chiamp turned away 30 of 35 Falcon shots in the first two periods and made 46 saves on the evening, including six big saves in the extra stanza. and Nick Bandescu tallied 15 seconds The victory ups the Wolverines' Cen- apart at 14:10 and 14:25. tral Collegiate Hockey Association DESPITE ALL the goals, both net- record to 8-8 (11-12 overall) and keeps minders played superbly in the second them in a fifth place tie with Michigan period as Kruzich stopped Bjorkman on Tech, which beat Illinois-Chicago last a break and Chiamp robbed Samanski night. Maulers den s signing Rozier PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Maulers denied yesterday they have signed Heisman Trophy winner Mike -Rozier to a multi-million dollar United States Football League contract, but expressed optimism they will reach an §agreement "sometime this week." Rozier's agent, Los Angeles attorney Mike Trope, said the :.Nebraska All-American running back is "close" to an .:agreement with the USFL expansion franchise and that he is, -"'cautiously optimistic" a deal will soon be reached. "SOMETIMES THE little stumbling blocks are the killers, but I'm cautiously optimistic that we can work something out," Trope told The Pittsburgh Press. Maulers President Paul Martha said he has gotten "the distinct impression" that Rozier wants to play in the USFL and won't wait until the National Football League draft on May 1 to decide his football future. "I think if things could be worked out, he'd enjoy playing in Pittsburgh," said Martha. "The kid really likes us. He's told us that. He likes the way we presented our -offer," said Maulers General Manager George Heddleston. Trope said rumors that surfaced over the weekend that Rozier has already signed with the Maulers apparently star- ted when the team sent Rozier a photocopy of a check "to show their sincerity," the agent said.
