The commercials were presented yesterday on MTV, cable's music cpannel, as a world premiere "ex- eluive interview presentation" with l$ob Giraldi, who directed the commer- cials as well as Jackson's Beat It video. "I think the whole world is interested i0 seeing these commercials," said l ITV executive Les Garland, who is so convinced of. Jackson's pulling power h~e has agreed to air the Pepsi spots free df charge. Sunday night, Pepsi held a black-tie rMception at New York City's Lincoln Center to show the commercials- to its 1,000 U.S. bottlers. The soft drink firm glso showcased the commercials last night in another posh party for Pepsi VIPs and guests at the Rex Restaurant in Los Angeles.-. Jackson, ironically, is endorsing a product he would likely never use. Although his brothers drink Pepsi in the ads, Jackson, a vegetarian and health- fbod disciple, doesn't. The commercials have no footage of tpe accident. There may be problems, however, in airing the commercials before the end of the program. Jackson is nominated for a record 12 Grammys, and CBS-TV rules prevent "cast members" from apearing in commercials in the body of shows. The rule may bump, the Pepsi spots to the beginning or end of the presentations. The commercials feature the Michael mania The Mickey Mouth: Tuck your lower lip inward and say cheese. t 2 . The sA.w is comprised of works from 37 artists across the country and one from Spain. ,,omposed primarily of handmade paper and assorted fabrics, the works give concise examples from the broad spectrum allowed by the exhibit's title. Texture abounds in ipfnite variations of material, color, and application as the bevndries between painting and sculpture become fuzzy, if golpointless. The surfaces'depth and grain draw the obser- ver in and many works almost seem to tease by demanding thWt forbidden touch. Several local artists' works are included in the invitational, including one by Ted Ramsey, a faculty member of the" in paper exhibit University art school. Two works of Ann Arborite B. J. Ben- nett are striking as linearly placed fuchsia squares give the illusion of a continual sweeping motion. "Mardi Gras," a piece from another local artist, Frank Cassara, is a splendid combination of abstract geometric figures and a paper surface whose texture goes far beyond that of a normal abstract painting. Though initially awkward to those accustomed to more representational art, the works present well thought out and skillfully crafted examples of what can result from com- bining various art media. Combinations that may very well be more aesthetically significant than any medium from which it draws. The Slusser Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit runs until March 7. -David Grayson After you've gotten your lips in tip top lip shape. come enter them in the va'riety of events at the annual Kissin' Close-up Games.
