Hockey vs. Michigan Tech Friday & Saturday 7:30 p.m., Yost Ice Arena SPORTS Basketball vs. Illinois Thursday 8 p.m., Crisler Arena The Michigan Daily Tuesday, February 14, 1984 Page 9 - I lhers needed lift.. Elliott, Carlile delivere By MIKE MCGRAW A FTER LOOKING sluggish last Friday night in a 7-2 loss to Ferris State, Michigan's seventh straight game without a victory, it was obvious that the hockey team that had played so well in November and December was in need of a shakeup. So that is exactly what Michigan coach John Giordano did, mixing up his lines radically and starting forgotten goaltender Jon Elliott for the first time since the con- solation game of the Great Lakes Invitational before New Year's. The result was a 7-4 Wolverine triumph, their highest goal output of the season. As well as getting its first victory in 27 days, Michigan gained two more firsts. Defenseman Todd Carlile tallied the team's first j hat trick of the season and in doing so, became the first Wolverine to win CCHA Player of the Week honors this year. But the true hero Saturday was Elliott, who after being named rookie-of-the-year in the conference two seasons ago, had a disappointing sophomore year. Then this season, he lost the starting job to Mark Chiamp and was relegated to spending game nights opening and closing the door to the Michigan bench. "It was frustrating, just going through practice and not playing," said the junior from Spencerville, Ontario. "There were only five games left and Mark was playing so well. I couldn't see myself starting one of those last games." But Saturday afternoon, Giordano called Elliott into his room in the Big Rapids Motel and asked if he could be ready to play that night. Forty-one saves later, Elliott had his first win of the season and the Wolverines had broken their winless streak. "I felt very, very uncomfortable and very nervous since it was my first start that was important to the team Blue Lines $* Thrnclads' ines -j making the playoffs," said Elliott. "Once we tied it up, I was pretty determined to not let anything get by." Not a puck got by Elliott in the third period while three went in on the other side of the rink. The final stanza of the series was the best Michigan has played since beating number-one Bowling Green the first week of January. Now the Wolverines find themselves comfortably in eighth place - only one game ahead of Lake Superior, but LSSC would have to finish ahead of Michigan to gain a playoff berth. A split in its last two series of the year against Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan at Yost Arena will be enough to hang on to the final playoff spot and a trip to Bowling Green for a two-game total-goals-scored series on March 3-4. But the hockey team will have to put its injuries and inconsistent play behind it. Michigan lost another skater Saturday when freshman forward John Bjorkman went down with a separated shoulder, but the injury doesn't appear serious: "The thing that concerns me the most is having four defensemen playing every other shift," said Giordano, "but we don't have much of an alternative." The defense is definitely where the pressure falls most with two regulars, John De Martino and Greg Hudas, out for the season and two others, Todd Carlile and Mike Neff, having to play a lot after recently coming back from in- jury-time on the sidelines. "It helps to have the team going good," said Neff. "When we're not playing well, you get tired after just about every shift. But when we're playing good, you don't feel as tired." "It was do or die for us on Saturday. We just dug down inside of ourselves," said Carlile. "We knew we had to By CHRISTOPHER GERBASI If athletes could qualify for the NCAA Track Championships based on first and second-place finishes, Michigan could send about half of its roster. But, of course, invitations are based on times and distances, and the Wolverines continue to come up just short of the standards. This past Saturday at The Spartan Relays, Michigan again had several top five performances, including eight fir- sts. THE DISTANCE MEDLEY relay team of Bob Boynton, Todd Steverson, Dan Smith and Ron Simpson raced to first in 9:49.4, only one second off the NCAA qualifying time. Sophomore Thomas Wilcher placed first in the 60-yard high hurdles with his best time of the season. Wilcher was clocked in 7.2 seconds, which also tied a meet record. "Other than those two (performan- ces), we didn't have anything fantastic in terms of time," said coach Jack Harvey. "We did have good depth in the field events again." SCOTT CRAWFORD scored an im- pressive double in the high and long jumps. Crawford cleared the high bar at 6'10" and then soared over 23'8 " of sand to finish second and fourth, respectively, in those events. Derek Harper and Vince Bean grabbed the top two spots ahead of Crawford in the long jump, both surpassing 24 feet. Seniors Johnny Nielsen and Scott Eriksson habitually finish one-two in the shotput, and Saturday was no ex- ception. Nielson tossed the shot 57'3 " for first, narrowly edging his friend Eriksson, by one-and-a-half inches. Other first-place Wolverine perfor- mances included Bill Brady in the three-mile, with a time of 13:50.9, Tony Krpan, with a triple jump distanceof 48'9", Dave Meyer, with a 8:53.2 in the two-mile,'and Dave Woolley, who tied for first in the pole vault at 16'0". THIS SATURDAY, the Wolverines head over to Eastern Michigan for the Central Collegiate Championships, which Harvey has been pointing to as an important meet.
