The Michigan women's track coach's goal was to qualify as many members of her team as possible for the NCAA finals in Syracuse March 9 and 10 and, according to Goodridge, the team performed impressively. "We're going to enjoy next week (the Huron In- vitational) ... most of our goals have been ac- complished," Goodridge said. Goodridge had high praise for pentathlete Melody Middleton who bettered the meet record and came close to breaking her own school record capturing 3775 points, 439 more than her closest competitor. "The Pentathalon is really ahead of what I hoped. Melody is definitely a contender for the Big-Ten title," she said. "I was concerned about the high jump but it came together in a week and Melody put nearly a foot on her long jump.'' SUE SCHROEDER qualified for the NCAA finals finishing second behind ex-Wolverine Sue Foster in the 3000-meter run. Schroeder's time of 9:22.3 was more than ten seconds under the NCAA qualifying time. Schroeder's finish impressed Goodridge who noted, "She beat her outdoor times and did that coming down with a cold." Goodridge was pleased with Joyce Wilson's 'We're going to enjoy next week...most of our goals have been accom- plished.' -Women's track coach Francie Goodridge performances in the 500-meter and 440-yard dash. In the 500-meter, Wilson clocked in at 1:13.29 beating the NCAA qualifying time of 1:14.09. She also won the 440-yard dash, edging out teammate Dedra Bradley, with a time of :55.74 but just missed the NCAA standard of :55.62. Wilson's performance was even more remarkable since she is suffering from a shin splint problem. The 4 x-880 relay team also qualified for the NCAA finals winning yesterday's final with a time of 9:01.36. Goodridge was still not com. pletely satisfied saying, "We have to do better than that. . . three of the legs were very good and its coming down." Team members Kelli Bert, Martha Gray, Laurette Mallard, and Jennifer Rioux still finished nearly seventeen seconds ahead of the second place Bowling Green "A" team. ANNETTE BOHACH, who entered the com- petition unaffiliated, tossed the shot put 52'9". eclipsing the NCAA standard and ex-Wolverine Penny Neer's meet record. Ex-Wolverine Joanna Bullard, who com- peted unaffiliated, tied the NCAA standard of 5'10%" and broke her own meet record in the high jump. Current Wolverines Dawn Rich) and Angie Hafner finished second and third with jumps fo 5'9" and 5'71/2" respectively. Karen Bowen of the London-Western Track Club won the 60 yard hurdles, breaking her own meet record of :08.04 with an NCAA qualifying time of :07.87. Gina Tempro of Eastern Michigan tied the NCAA standard of :8.03. Odessa Smalls of Michigan State qualified for the NCAA in the 60-yard dash beating the' standard of :7.01 by four tenths of a second. As the indoor season comes to an end, Goodridge is gaining more confidence in her athletes. She's happy with her individual eveti- ts and is expecting to concentrate on the relay events before the Big Ten finals and NCAA tournament. Dull week for U.S. SARAJEVO (UPI) - With little more than a haze of snowy disappointment immediately behind it, the United States can only hope for a brighter showing in the second week of the Winter Olympics. Five days into the 12-day ex- travaganza and still without a medal, the United States had high hopes to sneak away with two and perhaps three of the 24 medals to be awarded today. SO DULL has the action been for visiting Americans that one of the big items for them has been to attend prac- tice sessions for figure skaters and cheer on their favorites with waving flags. There were only two gold medal even- ts yesterday with Wolfgang Hoppe and Dietmar Schauerhammer leadiig a one- two East German sweep of the two-man bobsled and West German Peter Angerer capturing the 20-kilometer biathlon. East Germany now has three gold medals and four silver to share the medal lead with the Soviet Union, which has two gold, two silver and three bronze. THE BEST the United States could do in the bobsled was a 15th place by three- time Olympian Brent Rushlaw of Saranac Lake, N.Y., and James Tyler of Denver, Colo., while Lyle Nelson, another three-time COlympian from Olympic Valley, Calif., was the top American finisher in the biathlon with a 26th.
