Lovely legs await a chance to jump for the judges.
Sixty-two women exchanged hugs
and cheered for each other as they per-
formed on the floor of Crisler Arena last
weekend in the final tryouts for the
Michigan Pompon Squad.
They had spent at least a week
studying the cheers and dance routines
they would have to perform in the com-
petition for ten spots on the
cheerleading team. "I came out.of my
dorm at three in the morning and there
was one of them practicing in the
mirror," said one spectator.
The hopefuls spent the moments
before their tryouts 'fixing hair,
glossing lips, and making sure their
outfits were on just right. With smiling
faces and shaking hips, they danced on-
to the floor to the tunes of Michael
Jackson and Haircut 100 before a 12-
judge panel and offered their best Go
4~?Blue cheers.
When the excitement subsided, six
veterans and four rookies had been
selected for the squad. Returning are
juniors Jill Adcock, Michelle Bernier,
Leslie Kellerman, and Tracey Steele
and sophomores Kim Easterly and
Nancy Mattler.
The newest pompon girls are fresh-
women Heather Arsulowicz, Michelle
~'vy , 'yHenderson, Heidi Kraus, and Mary Ann
Saffold and junior Melissia Schade, who
