"I've heard from women students
(who say) they feel very lonely . . .
(and) have a sense of a chauvanistic
atmosphere," she says.
Until that atmosphere changes, many
women think progress is unlikely.
Although the University has been
pledging to increase black student
enrollment for nearly 14 years, women
note those efforts have had little suc-
cess, in part because many blacks view
the University as a hostile or indifferent
environment.
"I think you can set goals, but I think

Varner recalls a departmental com-
mittee meeting where she questioned
the group about the low number of
women and minorities in the depar-
trnent, and the only woman on the
committee responded that it was im-
portant to hire only well-qualified
people.
"That is a given for anyone we hire,"
Varner respbnds. "Icannot accept the
fact or the implication that the reason
we aren't hiring women and minorities
is because they're not equal to white
males."

chance to establish themselves firmly.
Because the number of women on the
tenure track is limited, they are more
likely to be asked to serve on commit-
tees than their male colleagues. The
opportunity is a mixed blessing, Ross
says, because it promises increased in-
fluence, but less time to write and per-
form research.
"Because you are a woman, you feel you
should do these things to give women
more visibility at the University you
wind up on more committees than you
should be on," she says.
"That's what young women should
not do. Theywshould apply themselves to
research because they need to have
publication to get promotions."
Ross says she sees increasing num-
bers of women coming into medicine
and the basic sciences and is hopeful
that the University will begin to narrow
the gap between the sexes. But she
doesn't expect it to happen anytime

soon.

the minority bit has shown us it's not
very productive," Regent Power said.
"Until the climate is different, the
numbers in minorities speak for them-
selves. Until a body of people are com-
fortable, we can make goals till the
cows come home.''
Varner also points to the University's
male orientation as a difficult hurdle
for women to overcome.
"I think one of the major challenges
is for men to believe you are a co-.
equal," she said.
"It's been a man's world so long it's
just natural for them to feel that,
'Here's a different kind of an entity -
an untried one. We don't know if she can
make it or not,"' Varner says.
Once a women attains a position of
power, Varner says she ought to attem-
pt to ease the way for other women, but
sometimes, she says, this doesn't hap-
pen.
"What bothers me is that so many
times I think we tend to hurt our-
selves," Varner says, by perserving the
status quo instead of attempting to
narrow the gap between men and
women.

"We don't want two standards. We

see it happening," Ross says.
One of those difficulties is that
