If it's the case, the hockey fans in Ann bor' should be able to hear the chigan hockey team howling all the Ly from Sault Ste. Marie this ekend. [he Wolverines will be doing plenty barking, and hopefully some biting, they travel to the great white north fight it out with Lake Superior State eighth place and the final playoff last ten and have fallen from a com- fortable fifth-place CCHA perch, who will have to do a lot of scratching and clawing just to hang on. "We've got our back against the wall, literally against the wall," said Michigan head coach John Giordano. "We've really got to win two games there."-' If they don't win both contests, it could mean a long struggle back into the playoff picture as Michigan has tough sets with Ferris State, Michigan 'We've got our back against the wall, liter- ally against the wall.' -Michigan coach John Giordano at least part of a game while nursing a wound. And things won't really get bet- ter this weekend. Right wing Frank Downing (knee) and defenseman Todd Carlile (knee in- fection) wil return to the lineup. But the Wolverines will still be without the ser- vices of defensemen Mike Neff and John DeMartino, who are both out with knee injuries, and Greg Hudas, who is academically ineligible. TO TOP things off, DeMartino's replacement, Joe Grusser, and center Brad Jones were injured Wednesday in practice. Grusser, who separated his shoulder, will not play while Jones, who has a back injury, is probable. The second thing separating the Wolverines from taking two is the healthy Lake Superior squad. Michigan hold a 2-1 advantage in the series this season, winning both ends of a two- game set played in Ann Arbor earlier this year. But that doesn't mean Lake Superior head coach Frank Anzalone and crew are going to run away from the Wolverines with their tails between their legs. "We're healthy, enthusiastic and hopeful," said Anzalone. "We under- stand what we have to do and now we have to go out and do it." - WHAT ANZALONE wants his team to do, though, is not necessarily concen- trate on winning, but instead on the fundamentals of the game. "Around here we don't have to always think about winning because Lake Superior isn't a winning team yet," he said. "What we want to do is play solid hockey in all three zones and control the puck - that's Superior's game. If we can do those things, chan- ces are the scoreboard will show in our favor, or at least it'll be close." Lake Superior is led by junior center Hockey Allan Butler, who has eight goals and five assists in the past six games and has 38 points on the season. He's flanked by two other high schoring for- wards - Monty Beauchamp (13 goals, 22 assists) and Kevin Collar (11 goals, 17 assists) - who make up the Soo Lakers' top line. Lake Superior has also gotten some good goaltending lately from Lawrence Dyck. The senior netminder has won three of his last four starts and sports a 3.58 goals-against average. statistics IT'S THE CHOICE OF THE COACHES JERRY ERICKSON'S Personal & Distinctive Hair Care 668-8669 Appointments Available Open Mon.-Fri. 8:30-5:30 p.m. Wednesdays 8:30-8:00 p.m. Saturdays 8:30-3:00 p.m. 806 S. On Saturday Michigan faces Minnesota, and the Golden Gophers will not be easily plowed under. "Minnesota is a good team, but they're not unbeatable," said Bahr. Evidence for his remark were the Gophers losses this week to Iowa State (23-15) and Michigan State (29-15). Un- fortunately the Wolverines also drop- ped one to the Spartans 23-16.
