With the return of top-dog Sam Vincent to the lineup, and with hated rival Michigan coming into East Lan- sing tonight, State is ready to satiate its hunger for victory. Nobody is more aware of this than Wolverine coach Bill Frieder. "WHAT CONCERNS me," said Frieder, "is that Vincent is back. With him they beat Iowa (Jan. 4). We're not playing a 1-7 team. We're playing the team that beat Iowa." I yincent injured his ankle in that game and missed the next six. State lost 11 six. He returned for 13 minutes aga nst Purdue Saturday and scored 16- points, but the Spartans fell, 72-54. State coach Jud Heathcote said his prize junior's ankle is "about 85 percent of- fensively and about 75 percent defen- sively." With Vincent's 16.4 scoring average back in the lineup, State is hoping to earn some respectability out of what has been a frustrating season. Co-Big Ten favorites along with Iowa, the Spartans have flopped but are looking to turn their season around. The home- and-home series with the Wolverines (the teams rematch Feb. 11 at Crisler) is where they want to start. "We've been pointing to this (game)" said Heathcote. "We've looked on this like we have to win. This is a big game for Michigan, too. They have to win if they have any hopes for a (conference) title." FRIEDER AGREED with his fellow hungr coach. He said Michigan needs to win both games if it entertains any hope of making a run at the title. A split will not do. "We have to win both games or else win all our home games," Frieder commented. Frieder's team has problems of its own. The Wolverines have lost four of their last five, including tough road losses to Purdue and Illinois last week. Their record stands at 4-4 in the Big Ten. With Illinois and Purdue on top with 6-1 records, every Wolverine loss is a costly one. Frieder is making another lineup change, hoping to find the winning combination. Leslie Rockymore's total collapse from outside (3-22 from the field in the last three games) was enough to convince Frieder to make a change in the backcourt. The fourth- year coach tabbed senior Dan Pelekoudas to replace the Rock. Still, Michigan's slump is nothing compared to the Spartan's famine. Although Vincent's absence had a lot to do with the dive, Heathcote pointed out a few other contributing (or non- contributing) factors. * KEVIN WILLIS: Willis twisted an ankle in December and since then has not showed the form that made him the league's leading rebounder last year. "He still favors the ankle," Heathcote said. "He's been kind of what I call a or win fader. He stays away from the physical contact and as a result his game has suffered." * KEN JOHNSON: The 6-9 transfer from USC was not allowed to play with the team until Jan. 1 and his game has showed it. He has not lived up to his pre- season billing as a dominant rebounder. 0 SCOTT SKILES: Skiles is averaging 16.6 points per game, but was lost without Vincent in the back- court. "I think maybe he's been trying to do a little too much at times - trying to score, make the big plays. With the loss of Sam, the weight of the world was on his shoulders." The weight became too much at Purdue. Skiles was held to four points in his worst game of the season. Add to this a weak supporting cast of Larry Polec, Ben Tower and Richard Mudd, and maybe the Spartan downfall is not as unpredictable as it seems. Heathcote himself. warned the media before the season that his team was overrated. But evenhe did not forsee a 7-10 record for his team at the end of January. "I'm not saying we're giving up," he said. "But our title aspirations are out the window. Our hopes to finish in the first division are very dim." But a win against Michigan would go a long way in easing some of Heath- cote's frustration. The triumph gave the Boilermaker a 7-1 record in the Big Ten and pulled them one-half game ahead of Illinois which plays at Iowa Thursday night. It also gave Purdue a 13-4 overall record while Northwestern fell to 9-9 and 2-6 in the conference. JIM ROWINSKI, Purdue's leading scorer, did not make a point. He picked up two quick fouls in the first two inutes and went to the bench. Bullock, filling for Rowinski, led the Boiler- n aker attack and scored 10 of his points a4 Purdue hammered out a 26-17 half- titne lead. 'he Boilermakers held a 14-12 lead with five minutes to go in the half before going on a 12-4 spree with Ricky H'li scoring six points in that stretch ircluding a 3-point play on a steal. Faculty and Staff: The :MACMURRAY ____Financial Rowinski picked up two more quick fouls early in the second half and again went to the bench but the Boilermakers fired to a 34-21 lead on the shooting of Hall and Greg Eifert. Art Aaron, who led all scorers with 17 points, got hot and helped pull-North- western within two points at 38-36 but a basket by Bullock and four straight points by Curt Clawson gave the Boilermakers breathing room. La1y Poho o yBIAN MASCK Dan Pelekoudas, who will start for Michigah tonight, did not have much luck on this shot last year. MSU's Kevin Willis (42) rejects it while fellow Spar- tans Scott Skiles (25) and Ben Tower (20) move in.
