Step in time The Paul Taylor Dance Company University Musical Society Power Center Friday, January 27, 8 p.m. By Julie Edelson "t F YOU WANT to perform, a I company has to tour," said Lin- da Kent, a graduate of Juilliard who has been a member of The Paul'Taylor Dance Company for nine years. Indeed, the company has traveled extensively,, to over 300 cities in the United States and 53 nations overseas. The New York- based modern dance company returns to Ann Arbor this year, as part of a whirlwind tour, marking the company's 29th anniversary. Paul Taylor is the sole choreographer for the 16-member company, who hail *CITIZEN IT SO from such diverse areas as Ohio, Cop- necticut, New Zealand, and Lebanon. The Ann Arbor program will feature, among other things, a new work, Sun- set, as well as Nightshade, a revival in a Victorian setting. Kent describes Taylor's work as, "an incredible challenge. Each piece is dif- ferent from the one before." She said that, although Taylor has not tried to cater to the audience, "he has found a ground that is of interest to everyone." Taylor was influenced by . Martha Graham, but, Ms. Kent said, "there is no set formula for Paul." He incor- porates a variety of visual mediums - music, technology, and art - into his dances. Kent had rave reviews for the Ann Arbor audience, which she described as "extremely wonderful and very recep- tive." She said that college audiences are the best because, "They come in fresh, willing, and ready to accept and react." The Ann Arbor audience will have the chance to sample the Paul Taylor dan- ce Company when they perform at the Power Center on this weekend.
