The first step in the Bronco road to recovery came with a 4-2 victory over Northern Michigan last Saturday in the final game of the split series. "Our players were down after losing (8-7) Friday," said WMU head coach Bill Wilkinson. "But they channelled that disappointment into momentum, momentum that could carry over to the Michigan series." IF MOMENTUM COUNTS for anything, the Broncos have this year's edge going into the weekend's double bill. In the pre-season Battle Creek tournament, Western topped the Wolverines in overtime, 6-5, the only meeting of the two teams this season. Both teams are battle-weary, a fact that could be a deter- mining factor in this late-season match-up. Michigan will still be without the services of injured right wing Frank Downing and defenseman Mike Neff. According to Wolverine head coach John Giordano, the defense will remain somewhat weakened by the abscence of sophomore Greg Hudas who is "having complications with grades," and will not dress against the Broncos. - THE GOOD NEWS for Michigan is the return of senior co-' captain Kelly McCrimmon at right wing. McCrimmon has missed seven regular season games, as well as the Great' Lakes Invitational, with a shoulder injury. The Broncos however, are not taking the wounded CE SLUMPING WESTERN a dyfor icers2 Wolverines lightly. "They're banged up physically," said Wilkinson, "btd I can't imagine them being any less ready to come at ug." Western's assistant coach Tom Newton echoed the sen- timent, "We~dave a lot of respect for how hard this team (Michigan) works. Besides, we're a little bit banged up our- selves." A KEY INJURY for Western is that of center Chuck Chiat- to. The Cranbrook alumnus and former Red Wing dr4ft choice left last Friday's contest with a knee injury and is ""ot expected to see action against Michigan. The Broncos' offense is paced by Dan Dorian, a sophomore right wing. Dorian tops Western and is ranked among CCIA leaders with 27 goals and 24 assists. Complimenting his out- standing season, Dorian holds a 29-game scoring streak that dates back to the final three contests of last season. The man responsible for cracking Dorian's streak is Michigan goalie Mark Chiamp. But Chiamp stressed the in- portance of the series to the CCHA standings. With third- place Northern Michigan travelling to take on difficult first- place Bowling Green, the Wolverines could well move up in the standings. "If we could win both our games, we could move up to four- th place," said the junior goaltender. "All the guys are ex- cited about it.' The Wolverines head to Kalamazoo for tonight's opening contest at Lawson Ice Arena, but the action will be back' in town tomorrow night at Yost Arena. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. Daily Photo by JEFF SCHRIER Michigan left wing Paul Spring attempts *,shot against Ferris State goalie Norm Young in action from a game in December.
