WOLVERINES MUST STOP WSU OPTION The Michigan Daily - Friday September 9, 1983- Page 21 Cochran returns to secondary By RON POLLACK Notes, quotes, odds and ends from the day before a Michigan season opener: Who would have ever thought that 1Mchigan would face a running team cnd worry about the fact that they are not accustomed to facing that sort of at- tack? :Yet, that is exactly the Wolverines dilemma as they prepare for tomorrow's game against Washington - State which is an option-oriented team. "It presents a problem," says Gary "Moeller, Michigan's assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. "It helps that we've seen some option on our own scrimmages. But theirs is dif- ferent. It's a split back veer option." *** Brad Cochran is back and the Michigan coaching staff couldn't be happier about the timing of his return. Cochran, if you recall, started the fir- st two games of the 1982 season at cor- ierback, but then quit the team. He transferred to Colorado following the fall term, but was not happy there. So x Lot, Hump his are new captains By RON POLLACK The Michigan football captains for rthe 1983 season will be offensive guard Stefan Humphries and defensive back John Lott. The two seniors were elected to be co-captains by their teammates. According to Lott, the job of captain covers a wide range of duties. "Responsibilities include being a role model, showing leadership, going to pep rallies and meeting with (head coach) Bo (Schembechler) once a week." Lott started in four games last season and intercepted two passes, second highest on the team. The co-captaincy, he said, is Ssomething he has had his eye on for some time. "I've been sort of thinking about it," . Itt said. "I saw as a freshman how ithey elected captains and I thought it would be a great honor. I'd watch what other captains would do and what it takes." Humphries started in all 12 games at offensive guard last season during which time he earned First team All- Big Ten and First team Academic All- America honors. The 6-4, 248 pound native of Broward, Fla. started his career at Michigan as a efensive lineman but was moved to of- fense midway through his freshman year. he returned to Ann Arbor, worked out his differences with head coach Bo Schembechler and earned a starting berth in the Wolverine secondary. Following spring ball, Michigan coaches expressec concern over the defensive backfield, but Cochran's return has helped alleviate some of their concerns. "Brad missed practically a year of football, so that hurts," Moeller said. "But we always felt he could be a heckuva player. He gives us added strength. Injury update: Steve Smith's bruised shoulder is not the only health problem on the Wolverine squad. Defensive tackle Mike Hammerstein has a cracked bone in his hand. "Hammer- stein is a guy we were counting on," Moeller said. "He was going to start." Kevin Brooks and Vince DeFelice will start at the two defensive tackle spots with Dave Meredith seeing a good deal of action. Also injured is strong safety Jeff Cohen who is wearing a cast on his right hand because of a broken bone. Cohen, who backs up Rich Hewlett, said that he hopes to play Saturday. Hammerstein, Cohen and Smith are the only seriously injured Wolverine players. Moeller said that a number of other players have assorted bumps and bruises, but nothing which the coaching staff is overly concerned with. "If they're not banged up a little bit, you're probably not ready to play," Moeller said. "that's always been Bo's philosophy. You want a few bumps and bruises. When asked if Michigan will shuttle in its running backs, Moeller said, "I think if a guy has a hot hand, you let him play. It will be a game-feel decision for the coaching staff." Wolverine running back coach Tirrel Burton said Thursday that no decision has been made yet as to who the team's starting tailback and fullback will be against Washington State. Starting Washington State left guard Dan Lynch on what it will be like to play in Michigan Stadium: "We played in front of 95,000 last year at Tennessee Stadium in Knoxville, but 105,000 people is just not something you're used to seeing every day of the week. So we're preparing for it by changing our huddle around a little bit so we can hear. We're looking forward to playing in Michigan Stadium. That's what college football is all about." 0@@ Unused Washington State football tickets will be put on sale at Crisler Arena Saturday at 8 a.m....
