By RON POLLACK Don't expect to see quarterback Steve Smith in the starting lineup for Michigan on Saturday against Washington State. In fact, don't expect to see him in the lineup at any time during the game. Bowl, Smith's shoulder was separated. "I don't really expect to play against Washington State," Smith said. "I think: it's been made fairly clear that I won't be playing unless I'm desperately needed." In Smith's absence, backup quarter-; back Dave Hall and third-stringer Jim Harbaugh will move up on the depthI chart. Hall, a senior, completed 20 of 38 passes last season, while Harbaugh did not play as a freshman last year. ff- . m Schlop Senior is n Smith ... on the sidelines That bit of disheartening news to Wolverine faithful comes from none other than Smith himself who suffered a bruised right shoulder during pre- season practice. Although it is the same shoulder as the one he injured in January during the Rose Bowl, it is a different type of injury. The thunderous chant which rocked Michigan Stadium last year whenever placekicker Ali Haji- Sheikh stepped onto the field has now faded into oblivion. It is but a mere memory, But the beat must go on for the Michigan football team and a suc- cessor has been found. After battling it out with three other kickers, senior Todd Schlopy has emerged as the victor of the Wolverines' placekicking derby ahead of Bob Bergeron, Pat Moons and Mike Melnyk. Bergeron will be Schlopy's backup. "ALL FOUR of them are very capable kickers," said Alex Agase, Michigan's kicking coach. "What we've looked for is consistency, and in that vein Schlopy and Bergeron, at this point in time, have ridden to the top. Schlopy and Bergeron are also the two best kickoff men. But again, kicking in practice and in a game are different. Personally, I have great confidence in these young men and I feel confident that they will come through on Satur- days." Schlopy's task is an imposing one, indeed. In Haji-Sheikh, he is replacing one of the finest, if not the finest, kicker ever to play at Michigan. Splashed all across the kicking sec- tion of the Michigan record books is Haji-Sheikh's name. His name tops the lists for most extra points in a game, most field goals in a season, most career field goals and most career extra points. "There are big shoes to fill," Agase said. After the 1983 Rose Bowl ended, and Haji-Sheikh's college career t 1 l 1 1 ywrs ew kicker with it, it appeared that highly-r touted Pat Moons was the leading candidate to succeed Haji-Sheikh who now does his kicking for th. National Football League's New York Giants. Moons, a sophomore, was rated as the nation's best prep kicker before coming to Michigan by Blue Chip Magazine. But to date, he has not been as steady as Schlopy or Bergeron. "HE'S A GOOD kicker," Agase said. "But right now he lacks the consistency of the other two. Downl the road he should be a consisteft kicker and at that time a fine kicker." Slp ... most consistent * Although Schlopy now owns the starting job, it is not altogether in- conceivable that Bergeron, Moonis or Melnyk could wrestle it away from him. "Productivity obviously is what we're looking for," Agase said. "This Saturday and coming Satu' days will decide that. The bottom line is productivity." 4 ""...ra-:;-. ..~ .. .fi . . :. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ..r.. f. s,,. .. .
