I SPORTS I The Michigan Daily Icers take o By JIM DAVIS The first half of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association is already winding down. Some teams play another series next weekend, but Michigan doesn't. And neither does Ferris State. That makes this weekend's series extra important for both teams. The Wolverines want to continue to build on a three- game winning streak. The boys from Big Rapids want to begin building for the second half by finishing the first part of the year on a high note. THE BULLDOGS visit Yost Ice Arena tonight at 7:30 p.m. fresh off a split at home against Northern Michigan last weekend, which put their CCHA mark at 5-7, good for eighth place. That's only one game behind the Wolverines (6-6), Wildcats (7-7), and Broncos of Western Michigan (5-5), who are locked in a fifth-place tie. That makes this a mighty big series. Only the top eight of eleven CCHA teams advance to the playoffs, and the seventh and eighth-place teams will likely end up playing at either Ohio State or Bowling Green, the top two teams in the con- ference. Jim show Friday, December 9, 1983 n Bulldogs Hughston, who has a 3-3 record in the CCHA (6-3 overall). Sophomore Norm Young will be his back-up. Both netmin- ders have had difficulty putting back-to-back*good games together, Bertrand said. Both Ferris and Michigan are battling injuries. The Wolverines will play without defensemen Mike Neff and Greg Hudas - both had arthroscopic knee examinations on Mon- day and are out at least a month. ALSO IN the stands is left winger Chris Seychel,, who was hurt at Northern Michigan two weeks ago. Seychel, the team's second leading scorer at the time, has a severely bruised thigh, but could be back soon after the holiday break. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, are minus left winger Scott Seaver. The Harper Woods sophomore had nine goals and seven assists before sustaining a shoulder injury several weeks ago. Defenseman Rob Brownlie also has been out with a broken thumb. Center Graham Craig has sparked the Bulldogs since returning to the lineup from the injured list. The junior has tallied six goals and nine assists in only seven games this season. "CRAIG IS really a key player," said Bertrand. "He's big hoc key Statistics Page 11 ALE A Downpour of Savings . Jimmy old.' He was the File of -- Ferris State coach Dick Bertrand (left) on his two-time, all- CCHA defenseman. "IT'S THE last series before Christmas," said Ferris State coach Dick Bertrand, "and we'd like to go home with a .500 record." That would take a sweep over the home-ice Wolverines, which Bertrand says won't be easy. "We have the book on their goaltending and size, and they ,have a lot of individual talent. If Michigan comes out hitting our young, inexperienced club (15 freshmen and sophomores could see action), we'll probably resort to that style. "WE CAN take the rough style of play as long as it's legal. We're going in prepared to skate, but we won't back down if it borders on roughness." Bertrand got a look at the Wolverines early this season in the Battle Creek Classic (the schools didn't,face each other). Though Michigan didn't play particularly well in the tourney, the second-year coach was impressed. 'Michigan was like a sleeping giant. They looked slow at Battle Creek, (but) now they've been nudged and they've got " oneeye open." One Wolverine who has really come alive is goaltender' Mark Chiamp. The junior has allowed only five goals in the last three games and is keeping Michigan in most games. "WE'LL TRY to penetrate Chiamp and keep the pressure on," said Bertrand, pointing out that Michigan has been out- shot in most league games, only to be saved by Chiamp's ef- forts. In his own net, Bertrand said he plans to go with junior Rob (6-2, 190) and can handle the rough going. But just when we got Craig back from an injury we lost Seaver. Seaver was a key to our power play and best face-off man." Randy Merriweather is the top scorer for Ferris State, having registered twelve goals (six on the power play) and 23 assists. Defenseman and captain Jim File also is a scoring catalyst, showing three goals and 20 assists this season. File is a two-time all-CCHA selection aid one of the top power-play pointmen in the league. Last weekend against Northern, File set up three goals, sparking a come-from- behind win on Friday night, and then Saturday slapped in a power play tally. "JIM SHOWED us consistency last weekend," said Ber- trand. "He was the Jimmy File of old. He has a cannon shot. He just hasn't been consistent all season.'' The Bulldogs' power play may not be as effective against Michigan. The Wolverines' penalty killing unit has allowed just one goal each of the past five weekends, while compiling a kill-ratio of .089 in 56 opportunities. On the season the Wolverines have allowed 17 goals in 101 short-handed situations (.168). Bertrand said that between .16 and .18 is considered excellent. All things considered, Bertrand is going into the series with guarded optimism. "We've definitely not played a truly physical club (like Michigan) and we've had difficulty on the road. We'll have our hands full, but we're capable of doing the job." Technology's Leading Edge Be a science or engineering of- ficer in the Air Force.
