In Saturday night's 4-3 victory over the Soo Lakers, the Wolverines lost defensemen Greg Hudas and Mike Neff to knee injuries. Hudas "It was a costly win," said Michigan coach John Giordano im- mediately following the contest. "(The injuries) could really hurt us." They probably really will. Accor- ding to Michigan hockey trainer An- dy Overmire, both players under- went arthoscopic examinations yesterday at University Hospital. Neither, however, needed further surgery. "It's always better when you don't have to do surgery," said Overmire. Neff, a junior from West Bloom- field, suffered a partial ligament tear in his left knee which Drs. Gerald O'Connor and Ruth Nauts chose to immobilize with a cast for four to six weeks. Hudas, a sophomore transfer from Notre Dame and Neff's defensive partner, also had slight ligament damage and was put in a cast, but Neff, Hudas out... ...but they'l be back still not definite and depends on how fast the injuries heal. Although the injuries are not as severe as was originally feared they will still hurt the Wolverines, who have now won three'straight and face Ferris State this weekend at Yost Ice Arena. Giordano and assistant Mark Miller will have to scramble and find quick replacements for the key blueliners. Hudas, 6-5, 210-pound giant, had been vastly improving as the season went on, providing the Wolverines with plen- ty of backside muscle. On Friday night he scored his first college career goal in overtime to lift Michigan past the Soo Lakers, 2-1. Hudas hart just seen teamed up with Neff, who had collected four assists so far this season. More importantly though, Neff provided much-needed experience to the young Wolverine defense. He was also a key player in Michigan's penalty-killing scheme. "It's a big loss and a definite blow to the penalty-killing team," said Neff's fellow defenseman and roommate John DeMartino. ''I hope he gets back as quick as possible." But don't be surprised if Neff's return is quicker than expected. You see, around Neff's house they have plenty of experience with fast recoveries. Last year, Neff and his other roommate, center Ray Dries nursed DeMartino back to health after a severe knee injury that was supposed to end his season. DeMar- tino played in the Wolverine's final six games. Later, Neff teamed up with DeMartino to get Dries back on his feet af- ter an ankle injury. So with Neff, anything should be possible. -"I have a lot of faith," said Neff . "I think I'll be back sooner. John and Ray I'm sure will be a big influence. I don't think it's going to be that long before I'll be back." 1. Bowling Green (15-1) ...] 2. Ohio State (13-3) ... 3. Michigan State (12-4). 4. Michigan Tech (10-6-1) . 5. MICHIGAN (9-8)......
