By SCOTT W. MCKINLAY The Michigan wrestling team managed to scrape its way to a strong seventh place finish out of 42 teams in the Caesar's Palace Open in Las Vegas this past Saturday. Although it is only the tournament's second year, Oklahoma State already has started a dynasty by winning it both years, as the Cowboy's 198 points were more than enough to overpower second place finishers Oklahoma, who piled up 115 points. Latora ... a pleasant surprise "It's sort of a who's who in college wrestling for anybody west of Nebraska," head coach Dale Bahr said. "With three of the top ten teams in the country participating, it is an excellent :chance for our kids to get a look at some :of the kids we wouldn't normally see, at least not until the NCAA's." MICHIGAN FINISHED with 54 poin- ts, enough to joust Big Ten opponents Wisconsin and Minnesota, who finished well behind the Wolverines. Latora showed great intensity and desire in finishing sixth out of 40 wrestlers in his weight class. "That's as hard as we've seen him wrestle this season," Bahr said. Other grapplers helping the Wolverines' cause included Bill Elbin, who wrestled at 177 last year, but was dropped to 167 this season. "He was real surprising, I was pleased," Bahr said. THE. BEST. showing of any Michigan wrestler in the tourney was JoeMac- Farland, at 126 pounds. MacFarland lost to Kevin Darkus in the finals. "He's going to beat him before the years over," Bahr promised. Darkus is ranked the number one wrestle in the country at 126 pounds. MacFarland is ranked second. Bahr said he was happy with the teams overall performance, but quickly added, "we could have wrestled much better in some places, maybe finished in the top four or five." Michigan lost some close matches, with Curt Torst losing in the semi-finals in overtime of the 190 pounders and Rob Rechstiener finishing up fifth after a strong preliminary performance on Friday. "This is a good gauge for this time in the season," Bahr went on to say. His only apprehension is "if we can gut it out this week, with Penn State coming in Wednesday and they're real strong. We also have Central Michigan on Saturday, I just hope we cannot let them know how much wrestling we've done this week."
