But oh so costly. Michigan earned the 800th hockey victory in its history last night at Yost Ice Arena, but the win was far form easy as the Wolverines edged Lake Superior State, 4-3. In the process, however, the Wolverines lost two defensemen with knee injuries,. Sophomore Greg Hudas, who scored the first goal of his collegiate-career in Friday night's overtime, was hurt in the opening period, and junior Mike Neff went down in the third stanza. The extent of either injury is unknown. "IT WAS a costly win," said Michigan coach John Giordano. "(The injuries) could really hurt us." Both players were taken to a hospital to be examined after the game. It was feared both had suffered ligament damage. The victory puts Michigan in a fifth- place tie in the CCHA standings. Goaltender Mark Chiamp was especially sharp down the stretch for the Wolverines. The 5-7, 150 goalie, who has given up only five goals in the last three games, stopped 32 shots, in- cluding 14 in the final period. THE WOLVERINES had taken a 3-2 lead on a goal by co-captain Kelly Mc- Crimmon at 4:36 of the period in a scramble at the Lake Superior goal mouth. Three minutes later freshman John Bjorkman added another goal to make it 4-2, but the Lakets struck back. With John DeMartino off for ut lose roughing, Marty Beauchamp flipped a goal past Chiamp after the Michigan netminder had made two consecutive saves. Despite plenty of opportunities, the Lakers could not score again. THE TWO teams had swapped goals in an infraction-filled firstperiod. Lake Superior scored first at 10:46 when defenseman Matt Cote's shot from along the right boards deflected off freshman Paul More's skate and past Chiamp into the webbing. Seven minutes later, DeMartino con- trolled the puck at the left point as the final eight seconds of a power play ticked off the clock..The senior defen- seman moved toward the corner and fired a shot from the right of Laker netminder Randy Exelby into the far corner of the net THE SECOND period began with the opening face-off at center ice and for the first fifteen minutes was played between the blue lines. Then at the 16:00 mark, Todd Carlile led a four-on- two Michigan rush. The defenseman skated in on the left side and around Mark Vichorek, then deposited his sixth goal of the season inside the right post. Michigan held on to the lead for the rest of the perioll, but just barely. Tom Stiles hit a post for the Wolverines at the 17:00 mark, then the Lakers opened an offensive flood gate. The Lakers were stopped cold by Chiamp three times and hit a goalpost, but the period ended 2-1. Mike Warus finally tied it early in the third, but Michigan dominated from there.
