Catch these airwave vibrations

QEPTEMBER 11, on a Sunday, reggae
star Dennis Brown will perform at
the Second Chance. In a land full of the
slings and arrows of outrageous for-
tune, do we really have to take arms
against a sea of troubles? After all we
.are not men, we are able to join hands,
rand collectively cryout "I'm not mar-
ching anymore."
It is like this. What you want to know
lis who is Dennis Brown, and why in
god's name you want to go to Second
JChance and see him. What does he do?
Therefore, to follow along with this
cogent line, we will now try to deter-
mine why a full bar of people have all
chosen to commit the same immoral
act by listening to airwave vibrations
for a certain period. What we will refer
1o in the future as music.
-Dennis Brown is a singer. Air, pushed
by his diaphragm, travels in a coloumn
up his windpipe and over his vocal cor-
ls, and out of his mouth. You know, it's
pretty funny, but you and I do this too.
So again, we have to figure out why
Dennis Brown merits our attention
Imuch more than say, an editor of the
baily, your local bartender, or a female
volleyball player with PMS.
The explanation following will, thank
the lord, be brief. In September, there
is an inordinate amount of extra noise
filling the streets as the flood of studen-
ts moving about pushes a great amount
of normally calm people into a really
tbad mood, as all the noise gets to them
Lfter a while... Thus, to drown outall
Jhis, we will use Dennis Brown,
because, unlike all of the ear murderers
out there, Dennis Brown sounds good.
Well, that was pretty simple, but
then, you probably are, too. It is impor-
tant to mention at this time that
although Brown is a reggae singer of
note in Jamaica, he is relatively

unknown here in the U.S. Therefore, in
order to make a little more cash, Brown
puts out an album every year or so on
the U.S. label A&M, containing nary an
ounce of the panache of his JA
pressings. That is to say, the music he
normally makes is sprayed with a
goodly amount of what we will call Cor-
porate Pledge, in hopes of selling more
to the people more accustomed to the
dusty confines of what passes for Black
pop today.
At Second Chance Sunday night we
will find out which of the different Den-
nis-es we will get to see (unlike Three
Faces of Eve, however, Dennis will not
be portrayed by Joanne Woodward).

assessed.
Eclipse also offers a lecture
series on the History of Jazz
which begins on Tuesday, Sept. 20
at 7:30 p.m. Hazen Schumacher,
producer of National Public
Radio's "Jazz Revisited" program
will serve as general host for the
series. These gatherings will be
held at Studio B in the LS&A
building (500 S. State).
