Lake Superior and next week's opponent, Ferris State, are both currently tied with Michigan for six place in the con- ference with 4-6 records. THE WOLVERINES have already played Superior this season, back in the consolation game of the Battle Creek Collegiate Classic in October. But if that game is an indicator of how the coming two will result, it won't be a happy weekend for the Blue supporters. Because in the game at the Kellogg crucial series Center, Michigan blew a two goal lead in the final 1:03 of regulation'and lost in overtime, 6-5. Wolverine coach John Giordano doesn't feel, though, that you can pass judgement on either of the two teams based on their first meeting. "That game was just too early in the season," said the coach. "We're both completely different teams now." There will be a big difference in the Michigan squad when it hits the ice tonight, in that second-leading scorer Chris Seychel will be out of action because of a severely bruised thigh suf- fered last weekend against Northern Michigan. This will force the Wolveri- nes to go to their bench, which has not been very productive thus far. BUT MICHIGAN CAN'T afford to suffer any letdowns against a Laker team that produced third-ranked Bowling Green's only loss of the season, a 2-1 decision on the Falcons' own ice. "What you're going to see is a very tough series," said Giordano. "Lake Superior will come in ready to play. I'm expecting a very physical series from these guys." The Lakers, besides being physical, have been very inconsistent this year. They have been very 'successful on Saturday nights, sporting a 5-1 mark, but are 0-6 on Fridays. But Lake Superior does own the league's top scorer that doesn't play in Columbus. Senior Monty Beauchamp is fifth behind four Ohio Staters in the CCHA with seven goals and 11 assists. The Wolverines should also be wary of the Superior line of Allen Butler (5 goals-11 assists), Kevin Collar (7-9), and Nick Palumbo (4-9). GOALTENDING HAS been the biggest problem for coach Frank An- zalone's Lakers, as none of the three netminders, Lawrence Dyck, Joe Shawhan and freshman Randy Exelby, have shown any consistency this season. If Michigan, though, can be con- sistent with its excellent performance of last weekend in Marquette, this series could consist of two Wolverine victories.
