FIFTH AVE. Across from Farmers Market By JEFF BERGIDA Well ... Ralph Sampson is gone. How can there be a college basketball season without Ralph? This is almost as traumatip as was losing Al McGuire's commentary on NCAA tournament telecasts. POOR RALPH. He never did win the big-one. Now 'his whole life is ruined; he's struggling along down in Houston - making somewhere in the vicinity of $1.5 million a year - and still is on national television every other day. " Mayber there's life after "The Big One." Parity. Pete Rozelle dreams about it. The NHL has installed a system where nearly everyone makes the playoffs in a feeble 'attempt to achieve it. College basketball has it. DID ANYONE last December predict that the North Carolina State Wolfpack, a bunch of guys named Cozell, Thurl and Lorenzo, would win the. national title? Even Jim Valvano would have had the guy committed. How can one make predictions about a sport where a team with 10 regular rnEasy season losses goes crazy in the post- season and beats the North Carolina Jordans, the Virginia Ralphs (twice), and, finally, the Houston Akeems? Let's take a shot at it, anyway. The first law of prognostication, one that should never be broken; is don't pick the favorites. Only wimps and people with no class pick the favorites. This year, everybody and his bookie are picking North Carolina number one, followed by Kentucky, Houston and Georgetown. Really going out on a limb, huh? It's sort of like predicting Nebraska to beat Northwestern in foot- ball. Of, course Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, Pat Ewing, Melvin Turpin and Akeem Olajuwon are great players but they were just as great last year and they all lost. The key to predicting is to take a good, solid team, somewhere in the middle of the "experts' " top 20s, and decide that it will be the N.C. State of 1984. Nobody likes a frontrunner. So without further ado. . . 1) Maryland-Q-Who was the only team to beat N.C. State last season af- S as A... ter Dereck Whittenburg came back from his injury? A - The Terps. Maryland coach Lefty Driesell has all five starters returning and the seniors are looking forward to their fourth con- secutive tournament. You'll hear about Michael Jordan but Adrian Branch has the talent and leadership skills to be just as great a force. The Terps beat North Carolina at College Park and put up a good fight at Chapel Hill. They know that the Tar Heels are beatable. 2) Georgetown-Ewing is going to be better than Sampson or Olajuwon. All the tools are there and John Thompson. is the perfect coach to develop a great center. With two fine sophomore guar- ds, Michael Jackson and David Wingate, behind him, and two years of experience, the, big guy is ready to carry the Hoyas. 3) Memphis State - Keith Lee isn't bad, either. Also, you have to love a team with a guy named Baskerville Holmes. Memphis State will have another 20-win season because the Metro Conference isn't all that tough. Look for Lee to lead the Tigers into the final four. 4) Iowa - What do you do when you lose Lute Olson, one of the finest coaches in American? If you're the. Hawkeyes you go out and hire George Raveling, an even better coach. Greg Stokes and Michael Payne will over- power the Big Ten and Raveling will have this team playing solid fundamen- tal basketball. Height and intelligence are a tough combination. 5) North Carolina - The general con- sensus seems to equate Michael Jordan with God. Maybe there's something to- it. Sam Perkins, Matt Doherty and Brad Daugherty surround the living legend and coach Dean Smith is back for what seems like his 40th season. Clearly, the Heels have the most talen- CI ted team prove? 6) UCI used to'i do a To clubs.
