The tournament, which did not use team scoring, was made up of 15 schools, including nationally -ranked Iowa, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin. RECHSTEINER lost a major decision, 13-4, to Minnesota's Mike Foy in the final match. McFarland, who has been the top-rated 126-pounder in the country for much of the season, lost a semi-final match to Iowa State's Kevin Darkus, 3-1. Darkus, who defeated McFarland two years ago in the NCAA tournament, went on to win the weekend competition. After losing that match, McFarland was upset by Northern Iowa's Randy Majors, 12-3, in the consolation match which dropped him to fourth place. "There are only two things that count, the Big Ten tournament and the NCAA tournament at the end of the year," said Michigan coach Dale Bahr. "Everything up until then is preparations. My biggest concern is coming back next Wednesday when we wrestle Penn State (rated sixth nationally)." GOLDEN ROSE PRODUCTIONS, INC. The SEC championship is Auburn's first in 26 years. PRIOR TO COMING to Auburn, Dye coached' at East Carolina and Wyoming. His overall record is 77-33-1. Since coming to Auburn in 1981, he has a 23-10 record, including a 9-1 slate this year. "This is truly a great honor," Dye said, "but it is not a great honor for me alone. It is an honor and a tribute to our coaching staff and to our football team. Any award I accept, I accept on their behalf. Whatever success any coach has is the result of a lot of hard work by a lot of people." Dye's 1983 Auburn team has compiled its 9-1 record against what is generally considered to be the toughest schedule in the country. The Tigers have played seven bowl teams, five teams in the Top 10 and seven in the Top 20. Those statistics do not include the December 3 game with Alabama, or the Sugar Bowl game with the Wolverines. "Coach Dye represents all of the qualities a great coach has to have," said Turner Broadcasting spokesman Bob Neal. "Not only does he have the skill to prepare a team every week, but in Coach Dye's case, he has the skill to prepare it to play the toughest teams in the country every week." 4 14 I Rechsteiner ... finishes second Coming through Miami quarterback Dan Marino tries to elude Cincinnati's Jim LeClair (55) as he follows a block by Andra Franklin (37) in last night's NFL game in Miami.
