MLHCKYPL ~1 By KATIE BLACKWELL Lacking that necessary "killer in- }stinet," according to Michigan coach John Giordano, the Wolverine hockey team saw a second period 3-1 lead over Northern Michigan go down the drain Friday night at Marquette. Forty-two seconds into the third period, Wildcat Dave Mogush put the tying goal past Michgan netminder Mark Chiamp. The shot set the stage for two more Northern goals, and a 5-3 Wolverine loss. ITeWAS frustrating to have a 3-1 lead on the road and blow, it," said Giordano. "We probably should have won two." Michigan came back to life on Satur- day night, however, dominating the Wildcats 5-1, paced by the two-goal per- formance of co-captain Kelly Mc- Crimmon. Senior Ray Dries started the scoring spree with a power play goal from Todd Carlile and Bill Brauer at the 4:38 mark of the first period. Both teams were held in check for the remainder of the period, and through most of the second stanza until Nor- thern's Kory Wright answered the Wolverine tally. BUT THAT was all the Wildcats could muster for the evening, as Chiamp finished the night with 27 saves. The line of McCrimmon, center Brad Jones and left wing Paul Spring provided the offense that handed Michgan the second game of the series. Jones, a freshman, collected a goal and two assists in a span of 2:43 in the third period. With the help of defen- seman Greg Hudas, he fed McCrimmon the puck to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead. Twenty-four seconds later, Jones made it 3-1 with an unassisted goal. 4 4 ) Jim McCauley, Michigan's leading scorer with 18 points, put the icing on the cake with his second goal of the series, a power-play tally near the end of the game. The trip to Marquette was a costly one. On Friday night, the Wolverines' second-leading scorer, Chris Seychel, injured a knee and was forced to sit out the second game. "SEYCHEL IS out for a while," said Giordano. According to the fourth-year head coach, the sophomore left wing will not play before the Great Lakes In- vitational on December 29-30. That leaves four games in which the Wolverines will have to compensate for Seychel's loss. The Thanksgiving weekend action leaves Michigan with a 4-6 CCHA record, tying them for sixth place in the conference. Northern is 6-6 and in fifth place. The Wolverines will try to move up in the CCHA standings with a four-game homestand in early December that will see Lake Superior State coming to town this weekend and Ferris State on December 9-10. University Ann Arbor, Ml corner of East and South University (313) 6623201 Crew works in winter F By JEFF HARRISON The Michigan Crew Club's very suc- cessful fall season is over, but the club is far from going into hibernation nor is its year close to ending. During the winter, the crew club con- ducts land workouts. These consist of running five miles six days a week and lilting weights three times a week. "EVERYDAY I find a new muscle that hurts," said club member Jim Hack of the workouts. The club will go back to the water over Spring Break, travelling to Tam- Club Sports Roundp pa, Fla. for intensive on-the-water training. It will hardly be a vacation for the club members, as they will prac- tice more than four hours each day. All of this training will help the club get ready for the spring season. In early April the rowers have races with other area clubs. Then, starting in late April, they travel to Madison for the Midwestern Sprints. In early May, it's off to Philadelphia for the Dad Vail Regatta. If everything goes well, the club will then qualify for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships in Syracuse. The crew club is confident that the winter and Spring Break training will pay off in the upcoming season. If it does, the crew club can look forward to a very successful spring season and rowing in Syracuse in June. How To Ease-heBurdens .Wwt., 'af- A A U! Campus Life.
