Michigan's sophomore center scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked six shots to lead the Wolverines to a 71-55 victory over North Carolina A&T. Starting in place of the injured Tim McCormick, Tarpley hit eight of nine shots and his only free throw to tie his career scoring high. While a personal best was enough to satisfy the 6-10, 195- pounder, Tarpley would have liked another bucket on his 19th. "I WAS TRYING to hit 19 (points)," he said. "That's what I told my mother when I talked to her before the game. I'm disappointed that I didn't." Still, Tarpley had to be pleased with his play. Michigan coach Bill Frieder certainly was, especially with his back- up big man's defense on North Carolina A&T's star forward, Joe Binion. "He did a good job guarding Binion," Frieder said. "Binion only got 12 or 14 points, I think. He was on Binion most of the game." BINION ACTUALLY finished the game with 13 points but hit only six of 20 shots. Tarpley played volleyball with four of the honorable mention All- American's shots. Tarpley swatted two Binion jumpers into the corner, spiked another right back at him and tipped a fourth away from behind. At the other end of the court, Michigan's offense worked well enough to free Tarpley and guard Leslie Rockymore for a variety of short jum- pers which boosted the Wolverines to an early 15-3 lead. The Aggies never got closer to Michigan than nine points the rest of the way as Frieder's squad upped its record to 2-0. Michigan built leads of up to 20 points and every time A&T would close the gap, the Wolverines would respond with a couple of fast break baskets. "THEY PRESSURED THE ball hard after we rebounded and when we broke their press we got a couple of breaks," Frieder said. "We didn't get as many breaks as we should have, though." But the Wolverines got enough to maintain their lead and give the fans a few thrills in an often lifeless game. Forward Rich Rellford brought the crowd to its feet-when he took a Butch Wade pass late in the second half, drib- bled twice and slammed the ball home with both hands over his head. PERHAPS THE flashiest play of the game didn't even result in a basket. Midway through the first half, Tarpley reached over Binion's shoulder and tip- ped the Aggie's shot to Eric Turner in the corner. Turner fired a full-court pass to Antoine Joubert who in one motion caught the ball, turned and passed back to Rockymore while being pushed out of bounds. Plays such as these occurired in- frequently and the Crisler Arena crowd announced at 10,805 reserved most of its applause for Tarpley and Joubert when they left the game late in the second half. Joubert finished with seven points and four assists. Rockymore followed Tarpley with 16 points as he connected on all seven of his field goal attempts and both of his free throws. WADE SNAGGED 10 rebounds to lead a somewhat poor Michigan back- board performance. For the second straight game, the Wolverines were outrebounded by a smaller opponent. Last year, Michigan dominated the boards in nearly every game. Missed Wolverine free throws kept Toledo in the contest and, when Rocket forward Ken Epperson completed a three-point play with eight seconds left, Toledo had a chance to shock the favored Wolverines. BUT WHEN Michigan in-bounded the ball, Toledo was unable to foul until time ran out. Leslie Rockymore sank two free throws with no time remaining to complete the scoring. Rockymore led the Wolverines with 15 points on 6-13 from the field. Michigan trailed for most of the game until Joubert ignited a rally that put the Wolverines in front to stay. Joubert struggled most of the contest, finishing with six points on 2-7 shooting from the floor, but his contribution was timely. With Michigan trailing 36-33, Joubert nailed consecutive eight-foot jumpers from the baseline, giving his team its first lead since early in the first half. After a Butch Wade steal and slam dunk, and a T oledo field goal, Joubert drew thunderous applause from the Crisler Arena crowd of 13,042 with a lovely, no-look pass to sophomore center Roy Tarpley for an easy hoop. Epperson was easily the most im- pressive player on the floor as he finished with a game-high 28 points and 17 rebounds. . ,? eent~as~slchii& ,D ue sa~ttusda ' ..n rT 22 .rn k ,a ,i~gerS ahcer V rt rmrr' ;
