'M' diver Kimball shoots for '84 gold /- - 4 .. ., ' By ADAM MARTIN July, 1984 -The Olympic diving trials. One day. A few dives. Either you put out or wait for '88. Seven months remain until ° Bruce Kimball faces this :/ 4 scenario. KIMBALL has been a two-time state diving champion and four-time All-America and has enjoyed a great deal of success in nationals and world championships. But Kimball's long history of accom- plishments will have only a slight effect on his Olympic chances come July. "You have to do it on that day, not on past performance. It all comes down to one trial," said Kimball. ALTHOUGH he is believed to be one of the leading contenders to make the USA's Olympic diviing team, Kim- ball himself isn't so sure. "Although past performance helps a little bit, there will be many chances for 10 other divers to make it who are just as good," Kimball said. "You have to toy ILImpit1C ~I pfT~ 4 9 ,A t 1. prove that you're the best on that par- ticular day." Of course, the magnitude of the Olympics might make one think that the trials should determine the absolute best. Perhaps, but Kimball is not con- cerned with the system because he can't fight it. "IT DOESN'T bother me because that's the way it is," Kimball said. "You have to adapt to the situation on that particular day and do your best." Kimball's coach and father, Dick Kimball, the 1980 and 1984 Olympic coach, can confirm'his son's assertions. Said the elder Kimball, "The Olym- pic trials are a one-shot deal, you have to have a good day. It is easy to say that Bruce will be (in the Olympics), but much harder for him to do it." ALTHOUGH the Olympic trials will produce two superb divers, Bruce Kim- ball feels that he will be competing for the second spot. Enter Greg Louganis, perhaps America's finest diver at the moment. Louganis has a certain edge right now over Kimball because of his morel complex dives. When computing scores, judges multiply points by degree of difficulty. And Kimball knows that, currently, his own dives make it difficult to beat Louganis. "I HAVE a tough time with Louganis because of degree of difficulty," Kim- ball said. "Before the trials, I'll have to learn new dives, and get stronger." Still, in Kimball's mind, Louganis is as close as one gets to a shoe-in for the Olympics. So Michigan's diving star will be shooting for the number two spot. "When he's on, it's hard to beat him," Kimball said, "so I'm going in realistically trying for second." NONETHELESS, that critical day next summer will be an atypical ex- perience for all USA qualifiers, in- cluding Kimball. Said Dick Kimball, "The USA has a unique situation, there are so many good divers and so much depth, you might miss out making the team on that day. Any good diver in another country would make it." Bruce Kimball's diving career will not come to a screeching halt if he fails to make the Olympic team, but that doesn't make the trails any less impor- tant. After all, said Kimball, "The Olympics are the ultimate amateur competition." -I Gridde Picks Engineering College Prof. Thomas Senior's laboratory was blockaded last week for a far more serious reason than originally thought. It seems Senior was conducting military research by simulating all twenty Griddes games in his radioactive pigskin lab and passing the results to top military officials to be turned in as picks. This infuriated the PSN (Pizza Sup- per Network), whose members blockaded the gridiron lab. Bum Phillip's Nuclear Saints (so called because they play their home games in a radioactive dome) also occupied the lab this week. One of the Saints said he was trying the create the Minnesota Gophers out of Fritos and refried bean dip. "I'm trying to create atrocity. If we have a nuclear war and all our foot- ball players die, the Gophers will finally be a football power." Turn in your picks at Pizza Bob's piz- za lab on S.
