For the first time since 1971, the Michigan-Ohio State game will iiot be televised by network television. --BUT THE WOLVERINES' head :eoach is happy as a lark. The reason, of ;eurse, is that the Buckeyes are coming 'td town, which renders everything else virtually meaningless to Schembechler and his squad. {"There's still the same anxiety, the same feeling because it's Ohio State," Schembechler said. "I don't see any difference.' Said offensive guard Stefan Hum- phries,.rBeating Ohio State any time is satisfying. Having the Rose Bowl on the line puts some flavor into the game, but not having the Rose Bowl on the line shouldn't take anything away from the game.'" IF ANYTHING, the fire that burns within the Michigan squad during Ohio State week may be hotter thanlever this year, since the Wolverines have lost to the Buckeyes two consecutive seasons. "I think anybody who loses to Ohio State three times in a row ought to be fired," Schembechler joked. . The two-game losing streak to Ohio State is no laughing matter to Michigan, however. "I OWE OHIO State a loss," said Michigan quarterback Steve Smith. "I've never beaten them as a starting quarterback. This game is an oppor- tunity for me, the team and the seniors to do something we haven't done the last two years. It means a lot to me." It also means a great deal to the Wolverines post-season bowl hopes. Speculation has been running rampant that the winner of the Michigan-Ohio State game will play in the Sugar Bowl, while the loser will play in the Fiesta Bowl. Michigan athletic director Don Canham, however, said that this is not necessarily so. "That's one of the things the newspaper people have been saying, but we haven't said it," Canham said. "I'llhave to sit down with Bo and see." CANHAM ADDED that the Cotton Bowl is still in contention for the winner of this Saturday's game. For the time being, Schembeohler could care less what bowl his team plays in. He refused to comment on the Sugar Bowl-Fiesta Bowl, speculation, preferring instead to speak about an Ohio State squad he feels is better than Rose Bowl bound Illinois. "Ohio State is a better all-around team," Schembechler said. "Offen- sively they're bigger and stronger. Defensively they are similar ability- wise. IN ADDITION to an opponent laden with talent, Schembechler is concerned about his squad's propensity for turning the ball over against the Buckeyes. "Only one thing sticks out in my mind from last year's game, six turnovers," Schembechler said. "The last two times they've beaten us we've had nine tur- novers. That sticks out in my mind." And when this season is over -and $chembechler is locked away in his of- fice preparing for a new campaign, it will be this weekend's game that sticks out in his mind. "WE ALWAYS JUDGE (the season) on the basis of the Ohio State game," Schembechler said. "Eight-and-three records are not acceptable." An 8-3 mark would indeed put a dam- per on the team's spirits, but for now they are thrilled that Ohio State week has finally arrived. "This week it's a lot of fun to prac- tice," said center Tom Dixon. "Preparing for a big game like this makes it exciting all week. These are the games you come here to play." SAID DEFENSIVE back John Lott, "I'm from Ohio. I'm also a senior. This is my last chance at these guys. I want to go out a winner. If we lose, I can't go home. This is a bowl game to me. It's bigger than the other years." With this in mind, Schembechler should have no difficulties getting either himself or his team emotionally prepared for the game. prepared for the game. "I guess you can tell that Bo is ex- cited about the game," Humphries said. "This week he doesn't yell just to get down on the players. It's more in- structional yelling. One assumes that adrenalin will be the week-long cause of this state of being. INJURY UPDATE: Inside linebacker Mike Reinhold broke his leg ,against Minnesota last Saturday and is out for the season. Tailback Gerald White has asprained ankle and will miss the Ohio State game. Outside linebacker Tom Hassel, who has been hampered by a pulled hamstring, is ex- pected to play against the Buckeyes.
