Last Monday at 1:30 p.m., 26 members of the Progressive Student
Network (PSN) walked into the radiation laboratory in the basement
of the East Engineering building. They blocked the entrance to the lab,
explained their demands to Professor Thomas Senior, and then
proceeded to endure their planned stay of 48 hours. Senior, one of the
most vocal proponents of defense research on campus, is currently
studying the effects of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) on aircraft.
PSN maintains that the research could be used to "harden" a struc-
ture to withstand the blast on a nuclear detonation and therefore be
classified as military research. Senior, whose research was stalled for
two days, says the speciic project he's currently working on involves
only lightning studies.
Except for television crews, a candlelight march, and the shift
change for the security guards, the two days were rather uneventful.
University President Harold Shapiro paid a visit in the 47th hour of
the blockade and deemed the action "inappropriate." An hour later,
the 26 PSN members filed out of the lab calling their stay "successful"
and vowed that this action would not be their last.
