In Michigan's 42-10 victory over the Boilermakers, quarterback Steve Smith threw for four touchdown passes, including a 41-yard toss to Triando Markray which was the longest of the year for Michigan. Now that Smith's sore shoulder finally appears healed, Air Schembechler looks like it's here to stay. "GET SERIOUS" say the Doubting Thomas' who've heard this song and dance all too often. Schembechler insists that he couldn't be more serious. "The fact that Smith's arm is better means we can throw more and throw deep," Schembechler said. "Those who don't think we can throw deep are mistaken. "I'M GOING TO throw the ball so deep that (defensive backs) had better start run- ning backwards. If Smith can keep throwing like that, they'd better back up. I'm a lot more encouraged about our passing than I've been all year." Schembechler added that it was unfor- tunate that the one-sidedness of the Purdue game precluded Smith from playing more. "It's really quite a shame that when he gets going like that, you can't keep him in," Schembechler said. "There's no telling what he'd have done because they weren't shutting him down. He made about two bad checks and that was about it. He threw one bad pass. Otherwise, he. was very, very good." ALTHOUGH HIS shoulder has prevented him from being very, very good for most of the season, Smith1 record books: * Became the first ever to throw four tc game. . This year, with slugging third baseman Bob Horner out of the lineup, Murphy carried the club through Sep- teipber, although the Braves finished three games back of the Los, Angeles Dodgers in NL West. At season's end, Murphy had become only the fourth National League 30-30 man with 36 homers and 30 stolen bases. He batted .302 with 121 RBI and 131 runs scored, and he did much of the damage in September.
