Basketball season tickets can be picked up at the ticket office The Michigan Daily SPORTS Tuesday, November 8, 1983 Men's basketball vs. Athletes in Action 4:00 p.m. Saturday at Crisler Arena Page 7 Bo set to bowl by the Gophers By LARRY MISHKIN It will be business as usual for the Wolverines this week, despite their weak opponent this weekend, the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Actually, weak is almost a compliment for Joe Salem's beleaguered squad that, already this season, has lost by such lopsided scores as 84-12 to Nebraska, 69-18 to Ohio State and 56-17 to Wisconsin. "(MINNESOTA) is playing hard, real hard," said Bo Schembechler, looking for something positive to say about the Gophers at his weekly press luncheon. "Minnesota has not been winning and they've been scored on a lot," said Schembechler. "But the films show that they play tough and physical football." The key question for theWolverines though, is with the Ohio State game coming up the following week, can the players maintain a-level of concentration tnat will prevent any kind of letdown against Minnesota. "THERE COULD be a problem with some players looking a week ahead," said Schembechler. "For- tunately, the game is on the road. This gives the players a little more apprehension. They'll practice hard this week because they always practice hard." Despite practicing hard, Michigan players will get a break of sorts as Schembechler also said he is beginning to cut back on the practices by 20-25 minutes in an effort not to burn out his players at the tail end of the season. A novelty of Saturday's game is that it will be only the second time that a Michigan football team has played a game indoors as Minnesota plays its home games in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The Wolverines only other indoor contest came in 1981 when they beat UCLA in the Bluebonnet Bowl played in the Houston Astrodome. IN THE GAME against the Gophers, Michigan will be without the services of tight end Milt Carthens who underwent a knee examination yesterday and is ex- pected to be lost for the remainder of the season. Replacing Carthens in the two-tight end offense will be Eric Kattus. Another Wolverine who may not be able to make the trip this weekend is fullback Dan Rice who has a bad neck. If Rice is unable to accompany the team, sophomore Bob Perryman, who was red shirted last season, will be used. John Lott, Mike Mallory, Kevin Brooks and fresh- man Garland Rivers are all healing from bruises suf- fered in Michigan's win over Purdue, but. Schem- bechler felt all four would be ready for action by Saturday. THIS SATURDAY will also be the first day that bowl bids can officially be extended to schools and Michigan's un-rosy bowl picture will finally begin to come into focus. By winning their last two games of the season, the Wolverines will more than likely wind up in a major bowl facing a highly ranked opponent. For the mean- time, though, Schembechler wants to concentrate on the Big Ten schedule. "We want to win the last two games of the season," he said, "especially the last one. Then we'll talk about the bowl possibilities. As for right now, I don't know anything about our bowl situation and have not talked to anybody about it since the Purdue game. I don't know where we stand."
