BIBLE NOTES
The book of Acts and the epistles of Paul show us the church in motion.
The early believers were characterized not just by who they were, but also by'
what they did. Acts 2:42 succinctly outlines their activities.
And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine, and fellowship, and in
breaking of bread, and prayers.
The first activity of the early believers was to busy themselves with the
apostles' doctrine. Three things will be true of us, if we seek to follow their ex-
ample.
First, we will be occupied with doctrine, or teaching. The people described
in Acts 2:42 had entered the church by "gladly receiv[ing]' Peter's sermon
(2:41), which described the historical death and resurrection of Jesus of Naz-
areth, and identified Him as the Messiah promised in the Hebrew scriptures, and
as King David's Lord. Such teaching is characterized not by vague abstractions
and subjectivism, but by references- to real people, real events, and real
changes in the lives of those who hear.
Second, it is the APOSTLES' doctrine that we will pursue. Christ promised
His apostles shortly before His crucifixion that they would be channels for His
revelation (John 16:12-15). The apostles, in turn, were conscious that they
were delivering the word of God (for example, I Cor. 14:37; I Thess.. 2:13).
Many Christian voices today clamor to be heard. The apostolic teaching, pre-
served in the New Testament, commands our foremost attention.
Third, we will "Continue steadfastly" in this doctrine-busy ourselves
with it, devote ourselves to it. It is not on optional treat, but vital nourishment
for godly life Wewill pursue it hungrily, study itaggressively, and focus our en-
ergies on carrying out its commands.
BIBLE NOTES is a ministry of Washtenow independent Bible Church. For more
information call Von Parunak (996- 1384) or Dave Nelson (434-9734).
