The Michigan Daily - Thursday, September 8, 1983 - Page 9-D First-division finish Golf coach thinks team is ready for one By JOHN KERR It's been six years since Michigan's golf team has finished ih the first division of the Big Ten, but coach Jim Carras feels that drought could end in 1984. "I'm very optimistic," he said. "I'm definitely looking for fifth or better. I'll be very disappointed if we don't achieve that." CARRAS'S OPTIMISM is a result of two factors - Michigan golfer Dan Roberts, and the Wolverines' perfor- mance at the 1983 Big Ten tournanent.- Michigan was not expected to do much at last season's con- ference championship in Iowa City, but after two days of the three-day event, the Wolverines found themselves in fourth place. On the final day, however, Michigan shot a total of 400, the worst 18-hole total of any team in the meet, and slipped to a sixth-place finish. Carras, although disappointed by Michigan's late fade, was very encouraged by his team's play. The major factor is Michigan's Big Ten play was Roberts. A junior from Ypsilanti, Roberts was the best golfer the Wolverines had last season, and if Michigan is to improve in 1984, he will have to continue his fine play. "He is the foun- dation of our team right now, no question about it," Carras said about the junior. THE MICHIGAN coach was not kidding. Roberts earned All-Conference honors by finishing in a tie for sixth at the Big Tens and was the only Wolverine invited to the NCAA Cham- pionship. His 18 hole season average was consistently around 75, and he was the only Michigan golfer to be the medalist at a tournament. Roberts is clearly Michigan's best hope for the next two years. Other golfers back from last year's squad include senior David Nolan, and sophomores Chris Westfall and Pete Savarino. According to Carras, Savarino was "sporadic" last season, but "the kid can play," the coach said. "If he ever gets the confidence he needs, he will definitely be a con- tributor." Nolan, Westfall, and Savarino all saw action last season. One other returnee who could also contribute is junior Ken Clark. His play improved late in the season and Carras thinks he could help. "He showed me a hell of a lot the last three weeks of the season," Carras said. "He could be a plus for us." Most notably, lacrosse and soccer haven't reached the big-time.
