4 Page 14 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 28, 1983 'M' out to scalp 'Skins By TIM MAKINEN When the Miami Redskins skate onto the ice tonight at Yost Ice Arena, astute Michigan fans may notice that the Red- skins bear a striking resemblance to 'the Wolverines of last year. The Redskins (1-3) were seriously hurt by graduation, losing their top three scorers and defensemen. The situation on defense is especially reminiscent of Michigan's plight a year .ago. For Miami, only senior Andy Mc- Millan returns from last year's squad to patrol the Redskin defensive end. "McMILLAN IS our elder statesman," said Miami coach Steve Cady, "and he is actually a converted forward and has only been a defen- seman for a year and a half. We'll be dropping back another forward (Jim Buettgen), and the game will be his fir- st on defense." Miami will play 12 or 13 freshman in tonight's game, but the Wolverines may have difficulty taking advantage of that inexperience if Redskin goalie Al Chevrier is up to his usual heriocs in net. Described as "outstanding" by Michigan coach John Giordano, Cherrier held the Wolverines to one and three goals, respectively, in Miami's two victories over the Blue last season. In addition, he is currently rated 20th among all Division I goalies. "Most everything we do will center around Al Chevrier." Cady said. "He is the backbone of our program and his performance is indicative of our poten- tial for success." Despite the loss of its three leading scorers, Miami will still have some of- fensive threats, particularly seniors Dave Wheeldon and Greg Lukas, and junior Andy Cozzi. Among them, Wheeldon is probably the best, posting 16 goals and 22 assists last season. The right wing is currently leading Miami Center Bruce Macnab carries the puck up the Dearborn. "(Wheeldon's) very good," commen- ted Giordano. "He's not an especially tenacious checker, but he can certainly put the puck in the net." Both teams will try to break losing streaks tonight, and each is looking for its first CCHA victory. Miami (1-3) lost to Ferris State last weekend, 4-0 and 6- 4, and has not had a victory since its fir- st game of the season, when it disposed of Windsor, 5-3. Michigan (1-4), meanwhile, is coming off 9-1 and 6-4 losses to Ohio State. Those were games in which the Wolverines played very poorly at times, yet occasionally displayed very determined hockey as well. If the Wolverines play determined hockey tonight against the young and inexperienced Redskins, fans should get a glimpse of how far Michigan has progressed from last season when it was in the same boat, experience-wise, as Miami is now. The four freshmen and one sophomore new to maize and blue jer- seys are center John Bjorkman, sixth so far in team scoring; Brad Jones, another center, who has tallied two assists; left wing Bruce Macnab who scored his first collegiate goal in the season opener against Michigan- Dearborn; and Dan Goff, brother of sophomore defenseman, Pat. The lone sophomore is Notre Dame transfer Greg Hudas, a 6-5 defenseman who also lettered in baseball for the Irish. "They're playing like freshman should," said coach John Giordano. "They're getting better. Goff and Dan Carroll (another rookie who has yet to see action) are coming along." HUDAS, THE hard-hitting Troy native, is happy with his change of schools, especially since Notre Dame discontinued its hockey program. "It's going a lot better," Hudas said. "I played-sparingly-I guess you could say. I was not happy. Now, the coach is giving me a fair shake. I'm playing well and things are looking up." The question of Hudas donning a baseball cap for the Wolverines is still up in the air. Because of the transfer, Hudas will be ineligible to play baseball until his junior year, unless he appeals his case with the NCAA. But right now, "the chances are not good. More than likely," Hudas said, considering his year of ineligibility, "a lot will depend on hockey." WITH THE HEIGHT and power of Hudas in their own end, Giordano is ATTENTION AUTO SPORTS FANS!
