Coming off last year's ninth-place finish in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), Michigan coach John Giordano decided to make several switches in the program. Included among jx4 b the changes was the hiring of ex-Wolverine star Mark Miller, captain of the 1978-79 icers, to help pwith coaching and recruiting.1 TO COMBAT THE type of start which plagued ' ... .Michigan last season (1-8 in the first nine CCHA games), Giordano set up and monitored a summer 4 weight lifting and running regime. The results pleased him. "I think our kids came back in the strongest physical shape they've been in since I've been 1 here," said the fourth-year coach. "We play a J physical game, especially in the defensive zone. Because of that we have to be in good shape, have strength, and be able to withstand punishment." The conditioning program is Giordano's answer to another slow start. ' 'team speed is another area where Giordano ex- I pressed concern, so this year he emphasized that in his recruiting. "These guys are better with the puck, have Kobylarz (19) to help pick up the slack and fill the net with pucks. better hockey sense, and are better all-around expectations players than the ones we've had before," said Giordano. The newcomers will have to begin producing goals right away to help fill the void in the goal- scoring column left by the graduation of last year's co-captains, Ted Speers and Brad Tipped; as well as center Joe Milburn. The three paye 4 combined for a total of 47 goals and 92 assists.. "THEY'RE GOING to be missed, but the teanm philosophy will be different now because we hajl a more-balanced attack and we don't have to lob for two guys to lead the team now," said Giordano; admiting that he overworked Speers and Tippett who played on both the power play and on penalty killing team in addition to taking regu shifts. The Wolverines will look to co-captains Jim 1 Cauley and Kelly McCrimmon to give the teJ leadership on the ice and expect to get balanc. r goal-scoring from returnees, sophomores Ch ยง Seychel (who scored 26 goals last year), Tom Stiles, Frank Downing and juniors Paul Kobylk and Paul Spring. The defense will be much improved over l season, if only because five blueliners returnv4 experience. "The defense will be the nucleus of our, tean-i said Giordano. "The big difference betweent team and last year's team is the defensemen n~w have a year under their belts. Everybody has played in games."~ All things considered, the 1983-84 Wolverines should challenge in the CCHA, and earn a post- season birth. Change, By JOE EWING Change is the name of the game for the Michigan forwards this year as the Wolverine attack will show new faces, new strategies and new philosophies. Gone from the offense are last year's lop scorers and co-most-valuable players Ted Speers and Brad Tippett, but Wolverine coach John Giordano thinks his squad can overcome the loss. "SURE THEY'RE going to be missed," said Gior- 'We're going to come down the ice like the Russians do this Oar, in two waves. We won't have to look for two guys to lead the team. I want the forwar- ds to score 15 to 18 goals each." Helping to bring that balance to the team are Michigan's newcomers. The Wolverines had an ex- cellent recruiting year, and have brought several highly-touted freshman into the program to provide + scoring help. t " Forwards hope to score with new players, tactics 1983-84 Michigan Ice Hockey Roster Among the freshman are center John Bjorkman from Warroad, Minnesota, who was picked by the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League draft last June after a superb high school career; center/left wing Bruce Macnab from Edmonton, Alberta, who tallied 35 times last year in junior hockey; and center/left wing Brad Jones of Sterling Heights, who played juniors last year in Canada. "I THINK WE'RE going to be a little bit more of a finesse team this year," said Giordano. "We've in- creased our speed up front greatly. We have guys that we think are better with the puck and they've got better hockey sense." Another newcomer to the front line for Michigan is left wing Doug May, who spent most of last season playing defense for the Wolverines. "Doug May will have a good year," said Giordano. "He's going to be a factor for us this year." The Wolverines will also rely on some vetrans this year to turn on the goal light in Yost Arena. Leading the way will be last year's Central Collegiate Hockey Association rookie of the year Chris Seychel, Michigan's top goal scorer in 1982-83 with 26. GIORDANO ALSO expects good things from center Tom Stiles and right wing Frank Downing, who should be paired up as two-thirds of' one of the Wolverine's top lines. "Look for Tom Stiles to emerge," said Giordano. "He's going to be a great player before he's done." "Frank Downing is probably the most improved player in camp right now," he added. IN ADDITION, THE Wolverines have high hopes in senior right wings Jim McCauley and Kelly Mc- Crimmon, as well as senior center Ray Dries, left wing Paul Spring and right wing Paul Kobylarz. The playing style of these veterans will change. though, according to Giordano. Rather than using the traditional three abreast rush when entering the offensive zone, Giordano plans to do things a little dif- ferently. "We're going to come down like the Russians do this year, in two waves," he said. What he intends to do is send his offense down in two sets of two, with two forwards entering the zone first followed by the third forward and a defenseman. "THAT'S REVOLUTIONARY for us," claimed Giordano. "And I think it's rather revolutionary for college hockey." One of the most effective weapons for the Wolverines this year will be their power play, which has already scored on 27 per cent of its chances this year. Giordano's top power play candidates include Bjorkman, McCauley, Seychel, Jones, Macnab and Stiles. In short-handed situations, Giordano is implemen- ting a new penalty killing strategy that will use three defensemen and one quick forward. As the '83-84 campaign begins, the sense of mystery about the quality of the Wolverine netminders remains. Mark Chiamp and Jon Elliott, both juniors this year, split action in the nets last season and compiled goals against averages of 4.06 and 5.32, respectively. That placed Chiamp 14th and Elliott 18th among CCHA goalies with over 400 minutes playing time. Whether the two can improve upon those efforts, which they must if Michigan hopes to be a league contender, remains to be seen. "The biggest question mark we have is our goaltending," said Michigan coach John Giordano. Particularly puzzlingis the status of Elliott. As a freshman he earned rookie-of-the-year honors and posted a sparkling 3.50 goals against average. Then came last season. A KEY FACTOR in Elliott's poor per- formance, however, was the inex- perienced defense in front of him. This season the defense returns with a year's experience under its belt, and perhaps Elliott can rebound and display the top-notch ability he demon- strated as a freshman.
