WE GOT 'EM' PURPLE, ORANGE, BLACK, GREEN, RED The Gold Room in Martha Cook displays some of the elegance that its benefactor William Cook thought would nurture "cultured American womanhood." Some residents are concerned that they are seen as being too old-fashioned. Mariha Cook women still figh old- ashioned image Acti( o Sport Wear 419 E. LIBERTY (2 Blocks of f of S. Sure, William Cook paid for both the dor- mitory and a good part of the Law Quad back in the early years of this century. But Martha Cook - named for the donor's mother - was built in 1915, almost a decade before construction of the Law Quad began. In the beginning, William Cook said the building ought to nurture "the charm and grace and principles of cultured American womanhood." These days, the notion of "cultured American womanhood" may seem a bit archaic, but the charm and grace still flood the all-women's dorm. From the portrait of Martha Cook above the main fireplace to the replica of the Venus de Milo in the main corridor, Martha Cook remains quite impressive. "MR. COOK'S theory was that if you surround young women with beautiful things . . . they will become more ultured," said Rosalie Moore, the building's director. She said that today's residents are interested in an at- mosphere condusive to studying, but "they are by no means grinds." The 153 residents, who range from sophomores to graduate students, must apply to get into the dorm. There are no requirements for admission other than waiting until there's an open space. City council reopens site for homeless (continued from Page 2) could work. 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. on various evenings," he said, but added the volunteers officially are on duty x only about half that time. Jonathan Tice, a volunteer at St. An- drew's said he thought a shelter in the church's basement was the best solution for the city's homeless. "In a house there are nooks and crannies where people hide so it's very difficult to supervise the residents. If the plans for the.city's permanent shelter fall through, the city is con- sidering using a voucher system but Tice doesn't think that would work. "When the voucher system was drop- ped during the summer and the homeless were moved into the I basement, the numbers per night. ... diminished," he said. "The hotels seemed to be such a nice place to stay, so the chronic and temporary homeless were not motivated to look for jobs." PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT Z" OZ Pe.. TO THE RESIDENTS, there are far more important dif- ferences than dorm governance. Senior Hana Schneider went right to the crux of the matter: '"No men." She also said it's a lot more quiet in her dorm. "It's more homey" was the phrase used most often by the women in describing Martha Cook. In addition to the social atmosphere, the food is far better than standard quaddie burgers, the residents said. Martha Cook exudes "a little bit of a sorority atmostphere," said Melissa Balogh, an Inteflex student. But residents say the dorm differs from the sorority in that its residents are not selected by the other women. "There's a pretty wide cross-section of girls," said Elaine Constand, an LSA senior who is the dorm's president. "In a sense, it's a cross between a sorority and a dorm," said Moore, the building's director. Said Christine Wanteck, another house officer: I think of this as my house. It gives you a feeling of coming home, but not of squelching you." YOUR BSN IS WORTH AN OFFICER'S COMMISSION IN THE ARMY Your BSN means you're a professional.
