Yes, Michigan completed its IM sof- tball season over the past week. The playoffs provided many exciting games in nearly all divisions of play. The championships were somewhat less competitive; defense was a rarity. The following is a summary of the playoffs and a list of final standings. IM Roundup Residence Halls 'A' Independents A -The most competitive .and exciting division was the independents A. Both teams in the finals, the Beeristers and the Patterson Dentals, charged into the championship on shutout wins. In the final game Patterson Dental jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Beerister pitcher Mark Jacobs. Jacobs, however, was not voted the Beeristers' MVP for nothing. He set- tled down after the first inning, not allowing the Dentals another run. Meanwhile, his team came back in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Jacobs put the Dentals down in order in the seventh inning to clinch the victory for the Beerister. Beerister assistant coach Craig Jones feels a balanced attack was the key to his team's victory. "They had weak hitting in the bottom of their lineup while we had a balanced attack. We won the game because they had a weaker link." Reeves squeezed by Adam Ants in the semi-finals with a 10-9 victory. Huber, meanwhile, charged by Taylor with an 8-3 victory in the other semi-final. Huber's momentum did not pay off, however, and they were crushed by Reeves in the final, 12-1. Grad uate/Facullt /Sta f/. The Law Big Dogs, after beating the Master Batters 18-4, won the champion- ship game by beating the Intentional Harms, 7-1. Korn blut top IM harrier Last Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. the IM Cross-Country Race took place at Mitchell Field. Well over-100 runners from all IM divisions competed in an at- tempt to gain team points. Hank Kornblut of University Heights, Ohio completed the approximately 2.4 mile course in a time of 13:24. "NO, I didn't think I'd win," said Kornblut, a junior in Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. "I've never run cross- country or track." Sigma Alp ha Mu I .1, Sigma Phi Epsilon 0 When the 1983 fraternity softball campaign opened, it would have sur- prised very few to see the Sig Eps taking the field in the final game, this past Tuesday evening. However, that SAM would be crowned champion might draw more than just a questioning glance. The Sammies' quest for that crown became reality, as they shut out the favorite (Sig Eps) by a score of 11-0. Displaying the sharp defense which carried them to the finals, SAM did not allow a baserunner past second the en- tire game, while also flexing some muscle at the plate. After setting Sig Eps down in the first, the Mu jumped on top with a three-run inning, capped by a two-run double by junior Andy Kates, who had a three-hit evening. NEITHER TEAM scored in the next two innings, but Sig Eps made its biggest threat in the third. With one out, back-to-back singles put runners on fir- st and second, but second baseman Ross Weisman turned a line drive into a double-play to squelch the rally. In the SAM fourth, after one out, four' straight singles by Kates, catcher Steve Miller, first baseman Bobby Mitchell, and outfielder Paul Schnell scored two runs to make it 5-0. Whatever chance Sig Eps had quickly vanished in the fifth when two spec- tacular defensive plays helped retire them in order. First, shortstop Tom Stotter went deep into the hole to throw out the lead-off man. Then, left center- fielder Damon Lawson made a diving catch just above the grass. The margin increased to eight runs when junior Joey Lansing crushed an opposite field, three-run home run in the bottom half of the fifth. The final margin of victory was reached as Sammies picked up another three runs in the sixth inning. * *Daily Softball Rankings** Fraternity 1. Sigma Alpha Mu 2. Sigma Phi Epsilon 'A' 3.
