I Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Sunday, October 9, 19&3 Fired up Blue gains Bo's 100th By CHUCK JAFFE EAST LANSING - Michigan 42, Michigan State 0. Bo Schembechler 100, George Perles 0. The dean of Big Teh coaches won his' 100th con- ference football game yesterday, trounced the Big Ten's newest coach in the process, and took the whole afternoon in stride. SCHEMBECHLER BECAME the third coach to win 100 conference games and accomplished the feat in just his 15th season as head coach. Former Ohio State Coach Woody Hayes, the all- time leader with 152 wins, needed 21 years to hit the century mark, while former University of Chicago coach Amos Alonzo Stagg didn't win his 100th until his 32nd year in the conference. "This just makes me feel old," said Schembechler. "Comparing me with Woody Hayes and Stagg; now that is some old company." But the significance of the win was not lost on the Michigan players, who wanted to give Bo number 100- in his first attempt. "WE WANTED to get Bo's 100th victory in the Big Ten and that added a little more incentive to the game," said Michigan linebacker Mike Reinhold. "This game was important because it was Michigan State, but it was also important for us to win it for Bo." "Bo was ready for it, and he got us ready for it and we played well," said quarterback Steve Smith. "We carried Bo off the field at the end of the game and we were really excited about his getting 100 wins." But Schembechler said he did not play up his oppor- tunity for personal gain while preparing for the game. Instead, he concentrated on the bragging rights of Michigan and the rivalry generated by the arrival of new Spartan coach Perles. MICHIGAN responded by playing classic, picture- perfect, Schembechler-style football, rolling up 292 yards rushing and 149 more passing. It was textbook Bo - using short, safe passes to keep the defense honest, and utilizing outstanding blocking to free his platoon of running backs. "These kids are very proud of Michigan and-its football tradition," said Schembechler. "They saw the challenge today they accepted it, and I am proud of them." Tailback Kerry Smith added, "Bo wanted this one real bad. His attitude coming in was that we are not the same Michigan team that we had been in the past. We proved today that we can be that same kind of team. "We were sky high for this game. To tell you the truth I didn't know that it would be Bo's 100th until af- ter the game. But that sure is nice. The defense fared no better, yielding the 426 yards to the high-powered Wolverine offense that seemed to move the ball at will. "We got whipped fair and square," said Perles. "We got beat by a better football team. We got beaten at home. We got beaten by the rules. It's bad for the players, the university, and everybody connected with it. I don't nake any excuses. If anybody wants to point fingers, point them at George." AFTER THE -GAME, Schembechler said that despite Perles' challenging statements, he did not want to em- barrass the coach. "I didn't try to embarrass (Perles) at all," said Bo. "We didn't do much in the second half and once our defense became dominant, we could substitute at will. "I was surprised at the way we won the game. We got on top early and con- trolled the game. This one was really important to us because in the back of our minds we were still naive enough to think we could win the championship," added Bo with a grin. STEVE SMITH, who enjoyed one of his best days by hitting on 11 of 16 at- tempts for 149 yards, also expected a closer contest. "I figured on a tighter game," said the senior quarterback who became Michigan's all-time leader in pass completions with 258, breaking Rick Leach's mark of 250. "I anticipated a tighter game, but sometimes this kind of thing hapens. Things seemed to fall our way early. (State) played hard the whole game, but things just kept working for us." One of the reasons things kept working so well for the Wolverines was the inspired play of the defense. After a miserable outing last week against In- diana, the defense got tough and stop- ped State. Besides the Spartans anemic yardage output, they could only manage seven first downs, only got in- side Michigan territory once, fumbled a punt away and spent most of the day lining up in punt formation to kick to Michigan. Brown, who started the season as the Spartans' third-string quarterback and is now starting because of injuries to Dave Yarema and Rick Kolb, com- pleted 13 of 21 passes for only 86 yards and had Wolverines chasing him all day. He was sacked four times for 25 yards. "IMAGINE THE enormous pressure (Brown) was under in a game of this caliber," said Schembechler. "It 42-0 behooved us if we could keep him from getting the ball to (wide receiver Daryl) Turner and take away their deep threat. We put a little more pressure on (Brown) and did stunt a lit- tle bit to get after him." The team's feelings for the game were summed up by Kerry Smith. "I'd say we were pretty sky high for this one," said the senior tailback who rushed for 52 yards. "Bo wanted it bad and we wanted it bad." Unfortunately for Perles, he had to learn the hard way what happens when Bo and his boys want to win a game badly. He also learned that the only place one gets his socks knocked off is on the field. And after yesterday's game, Perles is probably still at the stadium looking for his socks. i 4 Big Ten MICHIGAN ..... Illinois........ Ohio State...... Iowa ............ Purdue ........ "I'm Steve Smith; I'm Steve Smith," he yelled as he threw a touchdown pass to a wide-open reciever in the end zone. Not even the youngsters of East Lansing, who used Spartan Stadium as a playground after the game, wanted to play for Milhigan State yesterday. Even some of the real Spartans were probably unsure of whether or not they wanted to play for Michigan State yesterday. Or possibly ever again. The Wolverines crushed MSU and walked all over first-year coach George Perles' precious pride and recruiting program, and entrenched both of his green-and-white feet firmly into his mouth. The better team in the state of Michigan is Michigan - plain and simple, and as easy to understand as the zero that comprised the Spartans' part of the 42-0 final score. "It's bad for the players, the university and everybody connected with it," Perles said after the game. "I don't make excuses. If anybody wants to point fingers, point them at George." Certainly, Michigan fans will be pointing at George now that the game is over. Throughout the summer and fall, Perles spouted off about the MSU program and its improvement. And after the Spartans upset Notre Dame a month ago, he quickly pointed to the Michigan game. Michigan players and coaches took each word with a grain of salt, however, and prepared for the game without pomp. Yesterday afternoon, there was no need for words. The Spartans were defenseless; open to both the Wolverine attack and fan disillusionment with their program. The Spartans hare improved, but they still looked terrible, and as the players walked off the field, there was no doubt about which, team dominated 'this game from the pre-season practice field to the post-game interviews. The Spartans prepared with crass; Michigan won with class. No finger- pointing, no waving and shouting about who controls the state. That was saved for the locker room and privacy. "It was easy to prepare for Michigan State, because all last year and this summer they were talking," said Michigan defensive back Evan Cooper. "We heard stuff like 'Who is the rea/team in Michigan?,' and 'Our coach is going to do this and that.' That made it easy for us to get up for the game." But Minnesota came back with two late touchdowns to pull within seven points and had two more possessions to try and score again.
