Musica Antiqua Koeln is performing, beginning at 8:30 p.m. The group consists of violinists Reinhard Goebel and Hajo Baess, cellist Phoebe Carrai, flautist Wilbert Hazelzet, and harpsichordist Andreas Staier. Founded in 1973 by Goebel, its direc- tor, the group achieved its first major successes in 1978 with concerts in Lon- don's Queen Elizabeth Hall, Amster- dam, Paris, and principal German cities and festivals. It toured South America in 1979, the United States in 1981, and the Far East in 1982. Its current activities involve more than 150 concert and recording dates a year. Musica Antiqua Koeln records on the Archiv label of Deutsche Grammophon. A number of its nearly two dozen recor- dings have received international awards including three Deutsche Schallplattenpreise, the Early Music Award (London), Diapason d'Or, Or- phee d'Or, and the Critic's Choice. The repertoire performed by Musica Antiqua Koeln spans the 17th and 18th centuries. The group's preference for playing music for playing music from the original scores, often for the first time since the music was written, reflects its scholarly involvement with issues of performance practice. The theme for Tuesday's concert is "Music for the Potsdam Court." The pieces will be Philidor's Quartet No. 3 in G major, C.P.E. Bach's Trio Sonata in C minor, Janitsch's Quartet in E major, and a rare treat, a complete performance of J.S. Bach's The Musical Offering. Musica Antiqua Koeln performs on some of the finest old instruments, restored to their original proportions. Goebel plays Stainer and Rogeri violins, Baess plays Stainer and Pierray violins, Carrai plays a Gofriller cello, and Hazelzet plays a transverse flute modeled after a Rottenburgh. This will be the only chance to see Musica Antiqua Koeln in this area. Other cities on the tour are New York, Boston, Toronto, Pittsburgh, St. Paul, Seattle, Spokane, Vancouber, Berkeley, and Los Angeles. Tickets are available at the University Musical Society ticket office in Burton Tower. ll buy you a hot dog. nt you a Color TV. s gone. give you months of pleasure.
