TDr 5 3 TDp r .571 1 By LARRY MISHKIN The words have begun. 5 .514 3 On Saturday, the Wolverines will 7 .586 6 travel up to East Lansing for their an- nual intra-state showdown, but for the g next five days the battle will be a verbal Yds Avg one. 157 11.2 SOME OF the words are friendly, 142 11.7 some are praiseworthy, and some are 46 534. downright competitive. No matter what 23 11.5 the words are though, this is a big game 12 12.0 for both schools and Bo Schembechler 6 6.0 made that very clear at his weekly 399 10.8 press luncheon yesterday. 811 10.4 "I want to win," said Schembechler, who has come out on top in 12 of the 14 TDo PAK TP games he's coached against the Spar- 30 tans. "This game means a lot. We've 18 never done anything but made this 5-6 14 game a key one in my 15 years here." s- 6 s Despite Michigan's domination of s State in the last decade, though, Bo s refuses to take the Spartans lightly. 1 6 "EVERYONE IS talking about this 6 game because it could go either way," 6 he said. "We've always gotten the best 6 effort from (State) and hopefully we 6 always will. It's a great rivalry. I've 1 11-14 125 always had respect for this game. 1 8-8 81 "When I first came (to Michigan)," TDo-Other he continued, "it was not a Michigan dominated series as I recall. Most of all Avg Long the games have been tight." 37.4 52 Bo also had some friendly words for first year Spartan coach George Perles, 374.0 2 calling him a fine coach and a hard .5 working guy who is enjoyable to be Is around. "I can't find anything negative over 50 Tot to say about him except where he 3-3 coaches," quipped Bo. 1-2 IN ASSESSING State's talent, Bo 4-5s spoke highly of the Spartan's defense 3-5 and kicking game, as well as giving the offense credit for being opportunistic. Despite only averaging 242 yards a game, Perles' squad has climbed to a 2- 1-1 record and has outscored its op- ponents 90-89, a statistic that Bo said is one of the most revealing. And place kicker Ralf Mojsiejenko has already carved his name into the hearts of Spartan fans and Bo's scouting report (even if it is hard to spell) with his last-second 59-yard field goal last Saturday to earn a tie with Purdue. "(Mojsiejenko) is the kind of guy that should be outlawed in football," said Schembechler. "You know, when you can go beyond the 50-yard line, that's too much." MICHIGAN NOTES: Mike Boren who was injured late in the first half of Saturday's game and did not return, underwent orthoscopic knee surgery yesterday to determine the extent of his injury. "My fear is that there is a cartilage tear," said Schembechler at the lun- cheon. "Or there may be something lodged in the knee, but (the doctors) are not in there yet so we can't tell." Sophomore Mike Reinhold and junior Jeff Akers have been named as possible starters if Boren, Michigan's leading tackler, is unable to play. SCHEMBECHLER ALSO said that senior Tim Anderson, who has been out with an ankle injury, would begin to practice with the team and that wide receiver Gilvani Johnson would miss Saturday's game because of an ankle injury. ...Bo spoke positively of his beleagured defensive secondary that Puge-. rryBo has come under criticism lately for allowing 200 yards a game through.the air and over 50 percent of opponentsC passes thrown to be completed. "The secondary always gets it,"he said. "Sometimes, though, the linebackers are not in position or there is not enough heat on the passer. The time to get down on the secondary is when (the other team) hits the big one on you." ...Although the Wolverines have rolled up some very impressive rushing statistics so far this season (1220 yards, 305 yards-per-game; and 13 of 16 tough- downs on the ground) BO said that his team will have to start passing more. "I probably should get the ball to Bean more," said Schembechler of the senior receiver who had a touchdown dn Saturday. "We haven't gotten it to (any receiver) a lot. Don't think we'll get 300. yards rushing against everybody. I can live against Indiana and Wisconsin with poor passing, but not with everyone else." I i 1 1 1 Roge K. S S. Or was that tailback Kerry Smith? Or was that tailback Brian Mercer? It's hard to tell these days. Whereas most teams would be con- tent to have one tailback who could ef- fectively carry the ball, Michigan has. three.!Rogers is the starter and leading ball carrier with 347 yards on 67 carries in Michigan's first four games. When Rogers grows just a mite weary, in comes Smith who has 240 yards on 44 at- tempts. And when the Wolverines build a comfortable lead, in comes Mercer who has 149 yards on 27 carries. "The tailback runs so often in our of- fense that it's hard to run just one. So we run all three," Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler said. "So we'll con- tinue to alternate them." While Rogers recognizes the benefits of substituting, he adds that there is a drawback to such a strategy. "The substitutions keep everybody fresh," Rogers said. "So we can all go hard. But sometimes you get into a groove, have to come out and it takes something away from you." :Even though Rogers has received the muost playing time - of the three tailbacks, he does not feel he has progressed as quickly as he'd like. "I think I've been coming along slowly," he said. "I still make a few bad Ak tailbacks have not been widely used as receivers. Rogers seems to have ended this tradition, however, as his eight catches attest. "Going into spring ball, the coaches emphasized we'd have to throw the ball to the backs more because of the loss of Anthony Carter," Rogers said. Although there was no legacy to live up to in terms of catching the ball, Rogers has had some rather large shoes to fill when he runs the ball. Lawrence Ricks rushed for 1,388 yards last season, while Butch Woolfolk ran for 1,042 and 1,459 yards in 1980 and "The substitutions keep everybody fresh . . . But sometimes you get in a groove, have to come out and it takes -something away from you." -Rick Rogers 1981, respectively. "There's always pressure on the next guy to accomplish what the previous guy did," Rogers said. "But I think it's been handled." Kerry Smith, meanwhile, has had to handle being a backup despite some very impressive numbers. Last season, he averaged 8.2 yards a carry on his 45 attempts for 368 yards. This year, he is averaging 5.4 yards a carry and scored three touchdowns against Indiana. Yet, it is still Rogers' name that ap- pears on the Michigan depth chart as the first-string tailback. Nonetheless, Smith keeps plugging away without so much as a complaint. Also contributing is Mercer, although he usually does so once the Wolverines have the game in hand. According to quarterback Steve Smith, Mercer has been making the most out of these op- portunities. - "You can see that Mercer is getting better and better every week." Although Rogers, Kerry Smith and Mercer deserve much of the credit for their own success, it must be pointed out that they have done so with a little help from their friends - the Michigan offensive linemen. "For the second week in a row our of- fensive line has played great football and in particular (center) Tom Dixon has had a very consistent and outstan- - ding four games so far," Schembechler said. "Tom graded out at 89 percent which is remarkable. Tom is rapidly developing into what could very well be the top offensive center in the nation. "(Offensive guard) Stefan (Hum- phries) is such a great and consistent football player that he has the potential to become the greatest pulling guard that we have ever had at Michigan. There are few players his size who can pull around the end and hunt down cor- nerbacks and take them down. Stefan is a great leader and everything that you look for in a Michigan football player." Schembechler also said that the two All-America candidates are not the sole reason for his pleasure over the offen- sive line. "We had two great players going in," Schembechler said. "Now (offensive tackles Clay) Miller and (Doug) James, and (offensive guards Jerry) Diorio and (Art) Balourdas are playing great ball." 4. GIVE YOUR WINDOWS THE TREATMENT...
