BALTIMORE (AP) - Larry Herndon hit a two-run homer to key an eight-run second inning as the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-5 last night. Detroit sent 13 batters to the plate in the second against Mike Boddicker, 15- 8, who had hurled a five-hit shutout against the Tigers in his last start. Detroit starter Dan Petry, 19-10, pit- ched six innings to get the victory. AFTER THE Orioles jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first on Eddie Murray's RBI single and John Lowenstein's run- scoring double, Detroit erupted in the second as seven consecutive batters delivered hits. Lou Whitaker, Chet Lemon, Mike Laga and Wayne Krenchicki all drove in runs in addition to Herndon's homer, his 20th, and Alan Trammell's two-run double. The Orioles added a run in their half of the second when' Cal Ripken's single drove in Rick Dempsey, who had doubled. Lenn Sakata and Ripken hit con- secutive homers in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-5. It was Sakata's third homer. Ripken's homer, his 26th, also tied a team record for most hits in a wenty-one. As I sit here on my 21st birthday (unfor- tunately with nothing better to do at the moment than write this column), I can't help but be sen- timental. I can, however, be realistic. Not only would Walt Disney, if he were still alive, be interested in my life for another G-rated film, but I also know that my annual birthday wish - to be able to slam-dunk a basketball - will never come to pass. So, I figured for this milestone birthday I would make some new wishes for the year. pics and the NBA. 6. Attendance finally picks up at Michigan minor sports. 7. For the time being, the official word on the wide receiver is that his status is "questionable." In the Hoosiers' 10-8 loss to North- western last weekend, Gunn suffered a sprained ankle, sprained knee and strained groin. OUCH!!! On Monday, Indiana head coach Sam Wyche said there was only a 10-percent Antoine and Prince ... ... have they ever been seen together? chance that Gunn would play against the Wolverines. Gunn did not practice on Monday or Tuesday, thereby leaving his status up in the air. "RIGHT NOW I can't say if he'll be able to play because he hasn't been able to practice," said Indiana athletic trainer Kip Smith yesterday morning. "I'd say right now he's questionable. It's a day-by-day thing. He was initially on ice treatment. Now he's progressed to heat and whirlpool treatment. He's improved a little, but he still hasn't been able to practice." The injuries of most concern are those to Gunn's ankle and knee. "When you're dealing with ligamen- ts, you're dealing with a significant in- jury," Smith said. "It's a matter of how much pain he can put up with in a game. It could become a chronic injury if he's rushed back too quickly." In preparing for the Hoosiers, however, Michigan is going on the assumption that Gunn will play. "Gunn is the type of athlete, bruised or not, we have to be ready for him," Wolverine defensive back John Lott said. "'Game time comes and it's a whole different thing. You forget about the bumps and bruises then."
