But now a loss - even the gut- wrenching kind the Wolverinenes went through last Saturday - fails to faze Schembechler. He takes it all in stride. PERHAPS THE reason Schem- bechler can handle losses like last week's is that he has become ac-, customed to them. Bo has lost only 29 games at Michigan, but over 30 percent of those losses came in games which Michigan failed to convert a last second scoring opportunity that would have given it a win. Here's a refresher for those with short memory. " 1973 - Michigan 10, Ohio State 10 Kicker Mike Lantry misses a 34 yard field goal with 28 seconds left. " 1974 - Ohio State 12, Michigan 10 Lantry again fails to convert. He misses a 33-yarder with 18 seconds left. * 1976 - Purdue 16, Michigan 14 Michigan losses its top ranking when a 37 yard Bob Wood field goal attempt sails wide with 13 seconds remaining. - 1978 - Washington 27, Michigan 20 Late Michigan drive stalls when a Rick Leach pass is picked off at the goal line as time is running out. * 1979 - Notre Dame 12, Michigan 10 Irish block a Brian Virgil field goal from the 35 yard range with less than a minute to play. - 1979 - Purdue 24, Michigan 21 Michigan drives inside the Purdue five with under a minute to go, but can't score. * 1980 - South Carolina 17, Michigan 14 Michigan drives 74 yards to S.C. six with 28 seconds to go, but can't score on four plays. - 1982 - UCLA 31, Michigan 27 Michigan gets inside Bruin ten with 20 seconds left, but once again comes up empty. Add last week's loss, in which kicker Todd Schlopy missed a 32 yarder that would have clinched a victory, to the list and you have a very disturbing pat- tern. Sure, the Wolverines have won a couple games with last second scores, but those are few and far between. What is it about a Schembechler coached team that makes it come up short in the close games? YESTERDAY AT the weekly press luncheon Bo offered some explanation. "Sometimes you say 'all I got to do is come away with some points and I got you' - you don't go for the touchdown," he said. That's exactly what the Michigan coach did in the fourth quarter against the Huskies. The Wolverines had a second and five situation at the Washington 15 and instead of playing for six points, Bo called a conservatiVe play and later had to settle for a field goal attempt. "I lost the game on second down,'h le said. "Damn off -tackle play. I didn't want to call it. I called a bad play." a i ---. Scoring TDp TDo TDr 2 Rogers .... Schlopy ... Garrett .... Ilanl... S. By SCOTT McKINLAY Being a ballboy for the Detroit Lions offers me a unique look at the team, both on the field and in the lockerroom. As a result, I see and hear an unedited, distortion free version of the Lions. Perhaps the Lions' 30-14 loss on Sun- day to the Atlanta Falcons could best be summarized during Detroit's opening drive. On third down, Monte Clark thought Atlanta was offsides and he let the line judge know it. A futile argument ensued with Clark ending his comments to the official. "There's a place for you. It's called the USFL." It didn't take Clark long to make an enemy. Monte always lets the officials know just how he feels. Later in the first quarter, Clark was upset with a completed Atlanta pass GRIDDE If you saw someone sizzling on the way to class this morning, chances are it was Bill Cherniak, last week's Grid- des picks winner. Bill picked 16 win- ners, and-has been rewarded for his in- sight with a small one-item pizza from Pizza Bob's. You can drop your forms in Pizza Bob's on State Street or in the midtown store on Church Street. Include your name, address and phone number with your picks. Selections must be in by midnight on Friday. 1. MICHIGAN at Wisconsin (pick score) 2. Northwestern at Indiana 3. Illinois at Michigan State am - that he thought was out of bounds causing him to proclaim to the referee, "What the hell's the matter with you? Can't you see? You guys cost us the game last week and now you're going to cost us this one!" Seconds later the scoreboard 'in the Silverdome flashed the replay, showing that the catch was good. Did the officials cause the Lions to lose the game on Sunday? I think not. If that's the case, let's hope the officials stay out of Minnesota this weekend when Detroit faces the Vikings. FROM THE LOCKERROOM...Eric Hipple draws the Nike stripe on the side of his shoe with magic marker. Low budget you ask? Not quite Hipple's ankle has been sore so he gets it taped up each game. The tape covers almost the entire shoe. and unfortunately the stripe gets covered. Hipple, however, has a contract with Nike to advertise for them by wearing their shoe, so he must draw on the trademark stripe. ...When I asked wide receiver Jeff Chadwick why his hair was so long in his picture in the game program, he said, "Because when I first got here I didn't have any money to get it cut." Couldn't Lions owner William Clay Ford have fronted Chad ten bucks? PICKS 4. Ohio State at Iowa 5. Purdue at Minnesota 6. UCLA at Nebraska 7. Tulane at Kentucky 8. Penn State at Temple 9.
