The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 16, 1983 - Page 9 Weckler anxious to pilot spikers By STEVE WISE Michigan's quarterback is injured,, and she probably won't play for at least a week. She?! That right, "she" is senior Jeanne Weckler, setter, or "Quarterback" of the Wolverines' volleyball team. The Northbrook, Ill. native describes herself as "the mind behind the hit- ters," whose job is to call plays, set up other players and serve as the emotional sparkplug of the team. "I HAVE A lot of energy," Weckler said, "and I keep them going." While a sprained ankle suffered in the season's first match probably will prevent her from playing in this weekend's contests at Ohio State and Indiana, Weckler will still contribute verbally and spiritually to the team, albeit from the sidelines. When Weckler returns, she'll take a lot of experience onto the court. After graduating from Glenbook North high school with all-conference and Most Valuable Player honors in both track and volleyball, Weckler made the Michigan squad as a walk-on. But not playing her first year made the tran- sition from high school to college athletics difficult. "YOU FEEL like you're not con- tributing," Weckler said. "I didn't like the way things were done, and I com- plained, instead of saying, 'Let me try it your way.' Weckler saw occasional playing time her sophomore year - the year Michigan was Big Ten champion - and last year became starting setter, having switched from power-hitter along the way. "This year she's a stable force," said Wolverines head coach Sandy Vong. "It's when you're behind, when you have to dig a little bit deeper, she has this quality." WECKLER'Ssquality also extends beyond athletics. She was the first Street. Picks must be in by midnight tonight. Be sure to include your name, address and telephone number. 11. But it's still volleyball from which Weckler derives the most pleasure. "When we have a good match," she said, her blue eyes sparkling with in- tensity, "it's the best feeling in my life. Happy doesn't even describe it." BOTH VONG and Weckler cite ser- ving as the senior's greatest weakness. She did place second in the Big Ten in aces last year, but, she said, when she didn't serve an ace, she often missed. What Weckler doesn't plan to miss is her senior season. She said she's not a "sitting-down, watching-type person" and in fact was walking without crut- ches last night. Instead, Weckler will try to quarterback her team to a Big Ten championship. The Soviets klaim that the Korean pilot entered into Soviet airspace to steal their picks in this week's Daily Griddes.
