Steve Smith, bruised shoulder and all, is expected to play against Washington tomorrow. "I think we'll try to play Steve Smith some in this game," Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler said yesterday. "Whether he'll start or not I'm not sure, or if he starts how long he'll go. But I think it's in the best interests of our ball club to get him back in there some." tact," Moeller said. "I think we have our normal bumps and bruises. I guess it's unusual to have so few serious injuries, but it's a good feeling. There are probably teams who have lost a lot more players than we have." Although he missed a crucial extra point last week against Washington State, Todd Schlopy has apparently hung onto the starting placekicking. duties. "(Placekicker) Bob Bergeron is also making the trip with us, so we could use him as well. But we'll probably open the game with Todd Schlopy," Schem- becher said. * * * Because of the distance involved in travelling to Washington, the Michigan players and coaches may find their sense of time greatly distorted. "The biggest thing is the adjustment to sleeping and the time we play," Moeller said. "The kids can't adjust to that time change in one day. "WE'LL GET back (to Michigan) at 2:00 in the morning on Sunday. That makes the week shorter, especially for the coaches." Perhaps the biggest challenge the Wolverines will face this weekend will be what to do on the lengthy plane rides. Tight end Sim Nelson believes they'll manage just fine. "There's nothing you can do but get on the plane and take some books and study four hours there and four hours back," he said. "You just go out there and play the game and relax." "We know that he's a very talented young man," Moeller said. "I'm sure they'll work him into the lineup earlier than last think Robinson might be the the majority of the time. Of Hinds has played well. So this season, and this concerns the Wolverine coaching staff. "They do a lot of things with their of- fense," Moeller said. "Basically, it's how well we can adapt from the run to the pass. We have to stop both sides of their game. This is one of the best team's we'll face.' As if the starters on the Washington offense aren't reason enough to worry Moeller, special attention must also be given to one of the Huskies' backups. Jacque Robinson eaned All-Pac Ten honors last season by gaining 926 yards, despite not starting until the sixth game of the year because of an ankle sprain and rib injury. Once again, Robinson is not in the starting lineup early in the season although he is healthy. Instead, he is out of the starting lineup because of a weight problem which has reduced his ispeed. Last week against Northwestern, Robinson only carried the ball four times for 47 yards. Sterling Hinds took his place at tailback and rushed for 80 yards on 12 carries. Stanley H. "The teams are more even," Moeller said. "We're playing a tougher schedule than in previous years. We've lost to some pretty good teams." Washington head coach Don James when asked if Saturday's game is a Rose Bowl preview: "That'd be fine with me. Bo would probably go along with it too." Washington's 34-0 victory over Nor- thwestern last Saturday came as no surprise to Michigan tight end Nelson. "We know they lost a lot of people, but they're always tough and they're just like Michigan. They always have people waiting in the wings to play." . Moeller is not concerned about a possible letdown next week against Wisconsin following tomorrow's battle against Washington. "The fact that it's a Big Ten game should help," Moeller said. "We're not in a position where we're a superpower. Our kids know they have to scratch and claw for every victory." $2.00 WED. SAT. SUN.
