Y OU KNOW, I just love it when these
crack Jamaican bands come to
town and literally beat the shit out of
favorite Ann Arbor MTV reggae bar
bands. Every time they play I am more
impressed with just how much they are
aware of what they are doing, how
practiced they are in setting a hypnotic,
tripping, moving rhythm that bounces
rather than plods. How the wily
Jamaicans stab clearly and sharply
rather than cloud up the atmosphere
with more volume. Oh, I just love these
bands.
You know, it's neat too how these JA
singers manage to call up vibrant per-
sonality beneath red eyeballs. They just
seem to be entertaining in their
showmanship, dancing, gestures. Den-
nis Brown was just a fun little guy, a
ball. Backed up by the famed We the
People band, Dennis by degrees raised
degrees of agreeable happiness
throughout the various MTV fans,
Deadheads on holiday, and other stoned
revelers. Last Sunday night at The
Second Chance Everybody had a good
time.
After an opening act of swiss cheese
reggae/soul/soca/funk/something-
must-work-eventually on white with I-
tal, and a brief period of "Quick, let's

hurry up and get stoned before Dennis
comes on," We the People took the
stage, and opened it up, looked inside,
and scorched the wood.
Three alarm fire later, Brown boun-
ced on and sang a bunch of his new and
old songs. His voice slapped everyone
in the face with a creamy Jello pudding
pop, licking about in sweetness,
smoothness, and a hard stick under-
neath. A hop, a wiggle, a shuffle, a bub-
ble. Even the blazing horn dudes
showed a clever step or two, as
everyone sort of got caught up in the
goo of it all.
Dennis himself is not physically
proportioned correctly. His head is too
big for his body. No it was not an
illusion because of flying hair; his head
really is rather large. I figure it helps
resonate his voice, so I am really kinda
glad he looks the way he does. A real
head, not just head cheese.
A swinging popsicle lick for all.

/. appeal. "Art is not regional. It's not a
show of California artists, but rather a
show of. artists from California whose
art is universal," said Simsar.
The show's Diebenkorns, though,
may be too universal. As a series of
lithographs of seated women done in
1965, they seem to be without qualities
that seated people possess, such as
tranquility or even restlessness.
"Seated Woman with Crossed Hands"
is an exception. With only one apparent
nipple, Deibenkorn's woman sits and
dreams with deep-set onyx eyes, and a
contented impish smirk.
Also included in the exhibition is Sam
Francis' series of ten self portraits done
as etchings and sugarlifts. Simsar said,
'Berke may

Berke Breathed, 26, author and artist
of the popular comic strip "Bloom
County," said Monday he may stop
producing the strip if he can't negotiate
a new syndication contract with the
Washington Post Writers Group. A
recent conflict with the syndicate oc-
curred when it wanted to use Bloom
-,ounty characters on glasses to be sold
at a fast-food chain, Breathed said. He
is opposed to that type of merchan-
dising but has no contractual rights
over commercial use of characters in
the strip. "Bloom County" runs in
about 450 newspapers, including the
Daily, with a readership of 25 million.

"Both (Diebenkorn and Francis) are
established, as is Gilhooly...but
Gilhooly's also very much on the edge."
And with such an etching as "The First
Morning Cup of Paula's Coffee," -
1983, and such ceramics as "Frogberry
Shortcake," - '82 and "Herb Tea"-
'83, Gilhooly's whimsy is at its whipped
cream's peak.
The Alice Simsar Gallery (301 N.
Main) is open Tuesday through Satur-
day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the show
continues through October 6, 1983.
