By RON POLLACK
Step aside Anthony Carter.
For the last four years, Carter has
electrified crowds with acrobatic cat-
ches, thrilling runs and scintillting kick
returns. For the last two years, Vince
Bean has watched the All-America
flanker from his starting split end spot
while wondering "does anyone remem-
ber me?"
THE TWO-year wait finally over,
Bean's patience is about to be rewar-
ded. Carter has run out of eligibility at
Michigan and much to Bean's delight,
Wolverine head coach Bo Schem-
bechler does indeed remember him.
"If Vince doesn't catch 30, 40 balls
I'm gonna be disappointed," said
Schembechler.
As a sophomore, Bean caught 16
passes for 336 yards. As a junior, last
season, he hauled in 19 passes for 321
yards. And as a senior, well, who is he
to argue with Schembechler.
"I'M EXPECTING between 30 and 40
passes. That's realistic," said Bean,
who then burst into a wide grin, all but
licking his chops in.giddy anticipation.
"But I'll gladly take more. I'm expec-
ting to be the team's leading receiver."
And why not? Of the returnees to this
year's squad, Bean had the most recep-
tions last season. More importantly, he
has Schembechler's hearty support.
"Vince is one of the best route run-
ners we've got," said Schembechler.
"And Vince is practically impossible to
squat and funnel. What I mean is when
they bring the cornerbacks on him tough
and they try to funnel him in or funnel
him out and then get extra help deep on
him, you can't funnel him because he is
so quick. He "is actually quicker than
Anthony just getting away from that
first guy."
AH YES, the comparisons to Carter
have begun. Anything a Michigan
receiver does for years to come will un-
doubtedly be measured in relation to
what Carter did in his four years as a
collegiate. None of which fazes Bean
one bit all he wants is a chance to
764-0558

show-what he can do if given the oppor-
tunity. After two years of being
Michigan's "other receiver," Bean
relishes the opportunity of being the
Wolverines' top receiving threat.
"I'm definitely looking forward to
it," said Bean. "The patterns I've had
to run in the past were for first downs.
U'd catch the ball and either go out of
bounds or get hit immediately. Now I'll
get to run with it. I haven't been able to
do that in a long time.
"I'm looking forward to being a big
play guy like I was in high school. Since
I've been here, I've had to change roles
a little. Now I have to take Anthony's
place."
EASIER SAID than done. If Bean is
to fully succeed in this nmighty task,.he
must improve his skills in running with
the ball after he catches it, since the
patterns he has run the last two seasons
usually resulted in his quickly stepping
out of bounds or immediately being hit.
"During spring I was getting to run
with the ball and I wasn't comfor-
table," said Bean. "But it will come
back."
The other area where Bean must im-
prove is in his blocking. Not Pass
blocking when the other receiver slants
over the middle toward Bean, a defen-
der hot in pursuit. In such instances,
Bean floored an opposing player or two
with thunderous blocks last season.
Schembechler's concern is with Bean's
run blocking.
"I'm talking about running plays that

are run to his side where they don't
have a squatting corner (close to the
line of scrimmage)," said Schem-
bechler. "We don't ask him to block
that guy unless it's an inside play. but
when he goes to the secondary back
who is back and the ball is coming out
around there on a sweep or an option,
he's got to be able to jockey with that
guy and block him. It's a tough block,
but Bean will be all right."
TIE 6-3, 190 pound split end added
that, "They want me to be more
aggressive when blocking. In the past I
haven't gone out there to put a guy on
his back. Instead I just tried to get in
the way."
Of course, becoming the team's top
returning receiver doesn't just mean
that greater demands are made for im-
provement. The role entitles Bean to
some fun and games as well. There will
be more passes thrown his way, not to
