There seems to be quite a difference of opinion. By CHUCK JAFFE The last time Michigan coach Bo Schembechler was openly worried about his defensive secondary, the Wolverines finished the season by win- ning the 1981 Rose Bowl. This year, Schembechler has said that the secondary could be the weak spot in the defense, despite the presen- ce of two' returning starters and one part time player. WITH THE losses of only six defen- sive players, perhaps Bo was looking for a dark side to his veteran defense. Schembechler won't find many weaknesses anywf ee e on defense, although he does face the task of replacing inside linebacker: Paul Girgash, who was not only a leading tackler but a leader in heart, and out- side linebacker Robert Thompson. Also gone in defensive end Winfred Carraway, who quietly played his way to an outstanding senior season, as well as cornerbacks Marion Body and Jerry Burgei, and All-American safety Keith Bostic. BUT THE replacements for all but Girga-sh are tested, experienced players who saw spot duty in 1982. Fif- th-year senior John Lott, a sometime starter the past two seasons, will step into the secondary with senior safeties Rich Hewlett and Evan Cooper. The cornerback position opposite Lott will probably be filled by sophomore Tony Gant, who broke into the lineup midway through the 1982 season. Schembechler's concern for the secondary, however, could be real. Although the four starter's have received a lot of playing time, the back- ups have little experience or depth, and with all the Big Ten teams using air at- tacks, an inexperienced defensive back c uld become Michigan's biggest weakness. Senior safety Jeff Cohen was ready to start as a sophomore when injuries plagued his entire season. Now seasoned on the special teams, Cohen will also see some action in the secon- dary this season. Sophomores Ivan Hicks and Dieter Heren along with freshman Dwayne Freeman could also step in. THREE OF the four linebacking positions will be held by established veterans. Senior Carlton Rose will replace Thompson as the Wolverines' " big play linebacker, having shown prowess for stopping the sweep as well as running the blitz last year. Junior Mike Mallory would seem to be the choice to fill Girgash's shows. Arizona last year, impressed the coaches during his short stints of playing time last season. The rest of the linebacking corps will include two-tome team leading tackler Mike Boren, and converted fullback Tom Hassel. Boren will be expected to provide the leadership in the middle. TIM ANDERSON, Bill Lewandowski, and Mike Rheinhold lead the crew of linebacking reserves none of whom have been given a chance to prove him- self as a Wolverine. Middle guard Al Sincich, who has started since his freshman season, will spearhead the defensive line, and will be flanked by Kevin Brooks and either Mike Hammerstein, Dave Merideth, or Clay Miller. Brooks, at 6-6 230 pounds, could be the best pass rusher of the group as com- pared with former Wolverine and now St. Louis Cardinal Curtis Greer when he ,got off to a fast start last season. For the past two years, Schem- bechler has worried that the defensive front has not had enough sacks. This was especially apparent when Brooks was injured in the middle of 1982. For the line to register sacks this-season the down linemen must produce pressure and the outside linebackers, Rose and Hassel will have to be successful on the blitz. If the rest of the defense can not put opponents in a hole, punter Don Bracken will be there to help. Bracken, entering his fourth year as Michigan's punter, has led the Big Ten in net pun- ting average each of the last two seasons.
