The Wolverines were never a one man team with A.C. in fact, some games he rarely touched the ball. So it should come as no surprise to learn that Michigan will have a very good offense this season, even without the superb wide receiver. THAT'S BECAUSE the Wolverines have experien- ce back at almost every offensive position. The main loss was tailback Laurence Ricks, but there are capable successors. At quarterback, the offensive line, fullback, and the receiving positions, the, Wolverines have game-tested proven performers. One big plus for Schembeehler is the return of signal-caller Steve, Smith. Smith separated his shoulder in the 1983 Rose Bowl game but is "100 per- cent recovered" according to Bo. "This quarterback situation is as healthy as it's ever been at Michigan," Schembechler added for emphasis. Smith hasn't exactly been a fan favorite at Michigan Stadium because of the lack of consistency in his passing game but, now in his senior year, the Grand Blanc native should have all the experience he needs to be one of the top quarterbacks in the con- ference this season. Senior Dave Hall, who played in the Rose Bowl after Smith was injured, and sophomore Jim Harbaugh will be the backups. THE STRENGTH of the Michigan offense, as it has been in years past, will be in the offensive line. Only one starter graduated from last season's squad, leaving the Wolverines with a big and experienced line. Center Tom Dixon (6-2, 250) and guard Stefan Humphries (6-4, 262) are both back for their senior years and are legitimate All-American candidates. Senior guard Jerry Diorio (6-3, 245) and tackle Doug James (6-2, 267) both return to man their starting positions. The loss of Rich Strenger leaves the other tackle position open, but there are plenty of experienced linemen ready to take over. Larry Sweeney (6-2, 255), Jerry Quaerna (6-5, 265), Ron Pruse (6-3, 255), Art Balourdos (6-2, 240), Clay Miller (6-4, 260), Bob Popowski (6-3, 251), Mark Hammerstein (6-4, 262) and Bob Tabachino (6-0, 255) all have starting shots and will see some action on the line this year. The tight end situation is "healthy" says Bo, despite the loss of Craig Dunaway. Expected to fill in will be Sim Nelson and Milt Carthens, both of whom saw plenty of playing time last season. Junior Eric Kattus will also play, and could start, depending on how he recovers from a knee injury he suffered last year. Receivers Vince Bean and Gilvanni Johnson are back to replace Carter and should see an increase in the number of passes sent their way. MICHIGAN IS noted for its strong running attack, and although it doesn't have any one big name in the backfield this season, the Wolverines should have no problem moving the ball on the ground. At fullback, both of last year's starters return. Sophomores Eddie Your Ticket to Great Dining! Mar the perfect choice for fa Center Tom Dixon is an All-America candidate Garrett and Dan Rice are back and will be challenged for playing time by senior. Jerald Ingram, who was supposed to start last season but suffered an injury, Greg Armstrong, and Bob Perryman. The Michigan fullback crew gained under 300 yards total last season and must pick up the slack this year. At tailback, Michigan has an abundance of talent. Senior Kerry Smith, who gained 368 yards on just 45 carries last year, could start as could juniors Rick Rogers and Brian Mercer. Sophomore Ben Logue, one of the top runners in high school-two years ago could also break into the lineup. Surprisingly, Schembechler even mentioned freshman Gerald White of Titusville, Fla. as a possible starter. White gained 1,738 yards on 244 carries for 23 touchdowns during his senior year in high school. One major question mark for Michigan is it's kicking game. The departure of Ali Haji-Sheikh leaves the placekicking spot vacant. Schembechler hopes Bob Bergeron, Pat Moons, Mike Melynk or Pat Schlopy can do the job. Steve Smith is "100 percent recovered" accor- ding to Bo. 1982 Football Statistic Team Total First Downs. Rushing ......... Passing ......... Penalty ......... Total Net Yards... Total Plays ......
