"This year was just. remenidous with the Panthers developing into a cham- pionship caliber team," Spavital said. "But I feel obligated to pursue some opportunities that have presented themselves over the last few months." ALTHOUGH Spavital did not disucss specific job opportunities, he is repor- ted to be considering a business venture in Oklahoma. Spavital, a native Oklahoman, came to the Panthers with years of experience in football. He played professional football in three leagues including a stint with the Baltimore Colts of the National Foot- ball League. After retiring as a player, he coached in the high school and college ranks before becoming an assistant coach in 1968 with the Saskat- chewan Roughriders of the CFL. In 1974, he returned to the U.S. to ser- ve as coach and general manager of the Chicago Fire in the World Football League and then went on to assistant coach position with the San Francisco 49ers and the CFL Calgary Stam- peders. He was general manager of the Roughriders prior to being appointed to the Panthers post on Aug. 28, 1982. Spavital has been credited with building the Panthers into a champion- ship squad in the first year of the United States Football League by bringing key players, including former Wolverine Anthony Carter, Northwestern Louisiana State's Bobby Hebert and many others into the Michigan program. A team spokesman said a replacement could be named at a regularly scheduled press meeting on Monday.
