The Players aimed high with the satiric comedy, and they hit bullseyes from every perspective - theatric, ar- tistic, and choreographic. If there were any major flaws in the production of George S. Kaufman and Marc Con- nelly's best-known collaboration, they, were well hidden. Perhaps the most original idea in the production was a mock newspaper given to the audience during inter- mission. The newspaper contained humorous articles about the characters in the play and was an excellent exam- ple of the Players' enthusiasm for the play. The story line follows a young com- poser's apprehensions about marrying a women he does not love, making Satiric jabs at greed, social mores and the conflict between art and big business. Since most of Beggar takes place in a dream, its themes are dealth with in a humorously exaggerated manner. The director,'Walter Eysselinck, did a superb job recreating the surrealism of dreams; at times, the stage and ac- tors seemed suspended in space. When the dream ended, the audience itself felt as if it had just awakened. Eysselinck's ingenuity was obvious throughout. Although Eysselinch used few props and actors, the stage never felt empty and the size of the cast ap- peared much larger than it was. Gary Garrison's choreography was also noticeably creative. The actors' movement was relevant to the play at all times and Garrison filled the space of the stage well. The play's only ob- vious weak point lay in a pantomine sequence which was awkwardly choreographed, lengthy and confusing. Brian O'Sullivan was incredibly con- vincing as the greedy, materialistic Mr. Cady, and his character never faltered for a moment. He held bold stage presence and showed a good balance of theatrical indulgence and character ACCURACY, INC. Editing/Proofreading/typing Papers, articles, reports 971-4139 ECSTACY! Roya Meghnot was excellent as Gladys Cady and her portrayal of a vivacious, young socialite zipped her across the stage at the speed of light. In contrast, Ellen Boyle was consistently graceful and warm in her portrayal of the concerned, gentle Cynthia Mason. Michael Kaufman was convincingly despicable as the bratty, self-centered Homer Cady to whom the audience of- ten looked for humorous sarcasm. Scott Weissman executed the role of Neil McRae with great talent and self- confidence. He maintained his charac- ter throughout the play and in essence became a personal acquaintance of each audience member. Beggar on Horseback cannot be dismissed as just another amateur student production. In fact, the Univer- sity Players' performance rivals that of any professional theater program in Ann Arbor.
