Too obvious Bad Boys Starring: Sean Penn Written by Richard DiLelb Directed by Rick Rosenthal Playing at State Theater By Richard Campbell fB VVIOUS DOESN'T begin to describe the plot of the latest prison-rite-of -passage film Bad Boys. It also doesn't do justice to the actors or director. Sean Penn stars as Mick, a self- confident 17 year-old, continually on the wrong side of the law and running ram- pant in New York City. Though he willingly engages in various criminal activities, Mick is nonetheless com- passionate, as demonstrated by obligatory scenes with his hopelessly middle-class girlfriend. Shortly into the film, Mick decides to muscle in on schoolmate Paco's drug sale. The ensuing robbery, complete with blasting guns and screeching car chases, ends with Mick accidentally killing Paco's kid brother, Mick getting arrested, and Paco remaining free. The battered Mick is quickly sent to jail, or, as the judge puts it, to a juvenile den- tention center until such time as he becomes rehabilitated. Men's aqua blue, collarless shirt by Sahara Club. But that is just the first of many coincidences that keep the story afloat. Nothing happens in this film by itself, only as an action stemming from revenge. Even simple relationships that seem to humanize characters are eventually used only to foster more revenge and brutality. So, don't be angry that I've revealed that Paco's kid brother dies; his only pur- pose in the film is to die. Eventually Paco is arrested and guess to which detention center he gets assigned? There is a quintessentially bad western that is played by a cast of midgets; Bad Boys' is all the cliches of prison movies in one film played by a cast of teenagers. If there were twists in the movie's plot that turned on the cliches writer Richard DiLello might have had something. Instead, Bad Boys, like a western with midgets, just doesn't make much sense. Director Rick rosenthal's taut pacing and the precise, though forced, acting by most of the cast serve to somewhat redeem the picture. After playing a beach-freak in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Sean Penn is back in a film where he can really disply his talents. But to a good extent, the beach freak had more character and motivation than Mick. And when a film comes up short com- pared to a doped-out-beach-freak, you know it can't be good.
