ARTS Se Michigan Daily Thursday, April 7, 1983 Page 7 New rhythms rock on While some local bands feel the pressure to cater to the hard-rock Xroupies of commercial radio, some are able to transcend the demands and strike out on their own. Rhythm corps is one such Detroit-based band, and last 0ht they made their area debut with e lively Urbations at Second Chance. Rhythm Corps, formerly Rhythm Method, formed a year ago in Detroit. Comprised of Michael Persh on lead vocals, Greg Apro on guitar, vocals and mandolin, David Adamson on bass and vocals, and Richie Lovsin on drums and percussions, the band has recorded one album to date, opened for popular new music artists such as Flock of Seagulls and Duran Duran and has completed their own mini-tour of Southern California. Unfortunately, the group deserves more recognition than they now receive, - Mare Hodges I ~U$INESS TYPING-all kinds. Very professional. Reasonable rates and quick service. Call Lauri at 662-1678. Johnny Moynihan, who will ap- 62U0408 pear at the Ark Coffeehouse tonight, is one of those people. In 1966, while Sean O'Riada (an important figure in the Irish folk revival) was in West Cork searching for 61U0410 forgotten musicians and organizing The Chieftains, Sweeney's Men formed in Dublin. By 1968, when they ewly fur- released their first album, Sweeney's Men had made ~nd Hill. -___ a profound impression on the traditional scene, being the first to combine Irish music with American and British song and tune traditions. Moynihan, one of the three founding members of the group, is also credited with introducing the bouzouki, an Eastern European instrument best described as a mando-giraffe, to the Celtic realm. When they disbanded in 1969, Moynihan stayed on in Dublin playing music. Terry Woods returned to England to form Steeleye Span and find folk-rock stardom; Andy Irvine stayed in Ireland to start Planxty. Planxty became a huge success in Europe. Moynihan joined the band in 1973, adding his talent on mandolin, bouzouki, and tin whistle to the instrumen- tal strength and innovativeness which distinguished the group. He also has one of the loveliest voices in Irish folk music. When Planxty brokeup for a while in 1975, Moynihan defected to the new Galway band, DeDanann. He played on the first two albums, taking over lead vocals when ruby-throated Dolores Keane left after cutting the first LP. During this time, Moynihan added concertina and button accordian playing to his performance. DeDanann never kept a singer for very long, and Moynihan quit to pursue a solo careeronce more.'He has since toured with Rick Epping (of Pumpkinhead) and Last Night's Fun. He wasn't with the latter group when they were in Ann Arbor last winter due to im- migration problems, but we shall be well rewarded to hear him on his own with a bit of crack tonight. 3. 72U0413 m I" TYPING BY SANDI - 426-5217 Fast, Accurate, Reasonable.
